Unbelievable Olympic Feats that are Practically Superpowers
Some Olympic athletes have pushed the limits of the human body far enough to have created new limits altogether
Here are 5 incredible, almost superhuman, Olympic feats.
1. Unsain Bolt Is The Fastest Man Alive
Usain Bolt is Track & Field's icon for good reason: he is legendary. Bolt cemented his legacy by becoming the first man to win gold in the 100m sprint, 200m sprint and the 4x100m relay in three straight Olympics Games otherwise known as the “Triple Triple.” Bolt has had a 100% win-rate in all his Olympics finals since 2008.
Back in 2009, Bolt clocked in at 19.19 seconds and reached a top speed of 32 mph. By comparison, a cheetah reaches a top speed of almost 70 mph. This means Bolt can run almost half as fast as a cheetah, which is just about even when you consider that a cheetah has four legs.
2. Simon Biles Can Leap 9 Feet High
With 19 Olympic and World Championship medals, she's the most decorated American gymnast in history. The 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won 1 bronze and 4 gold medals, is her first Olympic outing. And all at the age of 19.
Weighing approximately 104 pounds and standing at 4 feet and 8 inches, Simon Biles' small frame isn't exactly intimidating. But at the highest point of her routine, she's able to jump and reach a peak of 9 feet 4 inches, almost double her height. That means she can almost reach a basketball hoop while jumping completely over Shaq! Maybe she should try out for the NBA next.
3. Katie Ledecky Wín Without Breaking A Sweat
American swimmer Katie Ledecky won 1 silver and 4 gold medals in the Rio Olympics and in doing so, set two world records.
However, what's most surprising about her feat is her win in the 800m freestyle. She set a new world record with a time of 8:04.79 and there was a huge 12 second difference between her and the silver medalist. When the TV camera recorded the end of Ledecky's swim, there were no other swimmers in sight because they were still at the other end of the pool. She was already on the podium while the other medalists were still cooling down. No need to rub it in Katie.
4. Michale Phelps Beats Entire Contries
Michael Phelps has won 23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze for a total of 28 Olympic medals. He holds the record for the most gold medals, too. In terms of medal count, the closest one to Phelps is Larisa Latynina (gymnastics) with 18 medals. Phelps has arguably created an unbreakable record for decades to come.
In fact, only 46 active countries in the world have won more Summer Olympic medals than Phelps. This means that Michael Phelps alone has more Summer Olympic medals than 160 countries combined. At this point, Phelps’ medals are a mere formality to signify that he is currently the greatest Olympic athlete.
5. Hidilyn Diaz's Super Strength
The weightlifting event consists of two lifts: the snatch event, and the clean and jerk event. The best weights lifted from both events are then added to determine the total weight count and the eventual winners.
How much did Hidilyn lift? Well, she lifted 88kg in the snatch (she placed 6th) and 112kg in the clean and jerk (she placed 2nd) for a total of 200kg or around 441lbs. This means that she technically managed to lift professional wrestler Big Show's weight equivalent. Yes, the 7-foot tall WWE superstar. Next thing we know, Hidilyn will be conquering Wrestlemania, too.
