Top 3 Foldable Phones Of 2019

A tech throwback of big proportions

One of the more memorable eras of mobile phones was the early trends of foldable phones. Relatively lightweight and compact compared to other phones of the time, many may have fond memories of snapping one open, as well as the satisfying click of closing it shut.

Now, foldable phones have become more than just a nostalgic throwback. They’ve reappeared in a new form: foldable smartphones. This idea of carrying around the screen capabilities and performance of a tablet, combined with the ability to fold into a phone for peak portability, has tickled the fancy of many technophiles.

Here are some of the top foldable phones that made their debut in 2019:

Samsung Galaxy Fold

The Samsung Galaxy Fold was released in September and retailed for about P123,990. This model sports a 7.3 QXGA+ (1536 x 2152) Dynamic AMOLED display when unfolded to a 7.3-inch tablet. It also features a secondary 4.6-inch display “cover” in phone mode. This foldable phone also boasts 12GB of RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC coupled with 512GB internal storage, ensuring fast and seamless processing.  The triple-lens 16MP+12MP+12MP rear camera and its 4,380mAh battery only makes the Samsung Galaxy Fold even more coveted.

Aside from being one of the more publicized foldable phones, the Galaxy Fold sold out on the first day that pre-orders were opened in April 2019. However, initial reports of screen damage and issues with the hinge of the folding screen prompted a redesign and a late release to the public. Despite this, Samsung has also announced that two more foldable phones are in the works, following the reception of the Galaxy Fold.

Huawei Mate X

The Huawei Mate X is the Chinese phone maker’s answer to both foldable phones and 5G connectivity. With an 8-inch OLED screen unfolded and a front-facing 6.6-inch folded display and a secondary 6.4-inch panel on the back, the phone debuted in May 2019 and was released to the Chinese market in October.

Priced at P249,883, the Mate X sets itself apart with its famed 5G connectivity, said to be four times faster than 4G. The phone itself folds down to a mere 11mm, allowing a perfect fit in your pocket. Other notable features include a 4500mAh battery, Kirin 980 processor and three rear cameras.

Motorola Razr

The Razr was one of the quintessential foldable phones of the early 2000s, with its sleek clamshell design. Now, the Razr has been resurrected as a smartphone. The all-new Motorola Razr flaunts a 6.2-inch flexible OLED panel tucked into a form similar to its predecessor’s iconic shape. It is completed by a secondary outer display panel, which is handy for responding to notifications and taking selfies without needing to snap the phone open.

Motorola and Lenovo developed 26 prototypes over four years to perfect the device’s final form. So it comes as no surprise that the Razr boasts above-average hardware: a Snapdragon 710 chipset and a 15-megapixel external camera. Pre-orders for this throwback-lookalike open in late December, arriving in stores January 2020.

The device is currently up for pre-order and is expected for release later this month.

There were more foldable phones that entered the radar last year, including the Xiaomi Mix Flex, Microsoft Surface Pro, an unnamed Oppo model, as well as a few patents filed by LG, Apple and Google. However, these models have only been proofs of concept thus far.

As exciting as foldable features sound, the technology has a long way to go. So until phone companies perfect the balance of functionality and innovation, opt to invest in tried and tested models that fit your needs.
