Tech Test Drive: Huawei Mate 10 Review

A rundown of the device’s best features—and where to get it at an exclusive discount

With so much buzz surrounding tech brands with cult followings and fresh releases piling up each year, it’s easy for worthwhile devices from other tech companies to pass us by. Case in point, take one of 2017’s smartphone releases: the Huawei Mate 10.

With a handy size, ultra-slim bezels and an exterior that combines metal and glass for a fine finish, the Mate 10 looks nothing short of luxurious. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo, which only a few other devices were armed with at the time of the Mate 10’s release. Thanks to Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 operating system, the Mate 10 boasts of a floating navigation dock and split-screen features which make navigation and multitasking are easier than ever.

Throughout the 5-day test drive, there was no lag in speed whatsoever. No matter how long the phone had stayed switched on (the 4,000mAh battery assured uninterrupted usage for up the entire day!), it remained at the top of its game. The Kirin AI processor does not disappoint!

But alas, this isn’t even scraping the surface. Over the course of our tech test drive, we pinpointed three aspects of the Huawei Mate 10 we appreciated most. Beyond the stunning exterior, long battery life, convenient operating system and responsive processor, what makes this powerhouse of a device worthy of your attention?

The Camera

Huawei has been developing its reputation for delivering high-performance cameras in the past years, and the Mate 10 is no exception. Fitted with a dual cameras (one at 12 megapixels and the other at 20 megapixels) that leverage on 4th generation Leica optics, the device combines the output of two lenses to take the sharpest image in superior quality. Expect fantastic images even in low-light environments, defined details and vibrant colors.

The Display

The device is fitted with a 5.9-inch LCD panel with stunning FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), which makes for a wonderful, cinematic display. Regardless of what we found ourselves doing on the device––tapping away in a game, scrolling through Instagram or streaming videos on YouTube––the experience was completely elevated by the sharp display and edge-to-edge screen.

The Price

With impressive features to back up its beautiful exterior, the Huawei Mate 10 is a premium device at a relatively affordable price. All factors considered, it places itself in the lower end of the smartphone price spectrum without making any compromises in form nor function. Bang for your buck alert: the Huawei Mate 10 is available on the Globe Online Shop for P29,990 (device only). You could also get your hands on it with a cashout of P1,200 via Plan 1999.
