iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 Pro: Which Should You Buy?

The latest smartphones may look and feel the same, but they carry distinct features and specs. Even so, the decision on which one you should purchase depends on your lifestyle and needs. Before we compare iPhone models, here’s a quick breakdown of the main difference between the two.

The iPhone 12 has an aluminum frame and a glossy glass back. This is the more affordable model with vibrant color options. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro is housed in a higher-quality stainless steel frame and matte glass back. This model has a steeper price, advanced cameras, and unique color options.

The Camera (Two or Three?)

The iPhone 12 has a dual-lens camera and Wide and Ultra-Wide lenses. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro has a more sophisticated three-camera setup: the same Wide and Ultra-Wide lenses, along with a telephoto lens and LiDAR Scanner.

The LiDAR sensor gives the iPhone 12 Pro the upper hand in augmented reality and depth sensing for photos and videos. Even more impressive, the iPhone 12 Pro has Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 60 fps, while the iPhone 12 has it for up to 30 fps.

If you’re into phone photography, you might want to go for the iPhone 12 Pro to accompany you on your adventures and get the latest camera technology to play around with.

Design, Display, and Size

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro both come in a 6.1-inch body. The similarity among the four models (including the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max) is the noticeably smaller notches in the front, flat sides that are similar to the iPhone 5, and thinner body. Plus, all the latest iPhone 12 variants come with an OLED display with Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology.

Taking the body and glossy or matte finishes into account, it all boils down to preference. Which size feels more comfortable in your hands? The stainless steel body in the iPhone 12 Pro feels heavier; however, it does look more elegant. If you don’t mind the aluminum body and you’re eyeing a bold color, the iPhone 12 has fun color options you can choose from.

Performance

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro both run on Apple’s powerful A14 Bionic processor, which the tech titan claims as the “fastest chip in a smartphone.” It is roughly 17% faster than their previous A13 chipset. It is worth noting that the iPhone 12 has 4GB RAM while the iPhone 12 Pro has 6GB RAM.

If you aren’t one for heavy streaming, gaming, or taking photos, you wouldn’t notice that big difference for your daily use, but it’s one thing to consider if you want to make the most of the phone’s performance and endurance.

Battery Life and Charging

When you compare the iPhone models on Apple’s website, it shows that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro share the same battery life: up to 17 hours for video playback, up to 11 hours for streamed video playback, and up to 65 hours for audio playback.

Both handsets support fast-charging, 7.5W Qi wireless charging, and 15W wireless charging when using a MagSafe wireless charger. The fast-charge on both devices is up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher. For many people, the iPhone 12 is more than capable of handling everyday tasks. But if you require more power and RAM, the bells and whistles of the iPhone 12 Pro may be a better choice.

Price

One of the biggest considerations, as far as pricing goes, there is a large difference between the two devices. The iPhone 12 retails for P49,990 for 64GB of storage, while the iPhone 12 Pro starts at P62,990 for 128GB.

The P13,000 price difference between the two is something to ponder on. When you get the more affordable iPhone 12, the price difference can pay for all the accessories you want. But if you find that the more advanced features and specifications on the iPhone 12 Pro suit your lifestyle, the steep price may be worth shelling out for.
