“Hello Moto” by Lenovo—Wait, What?

You read that right, Lenovo just acquired Motorola

Lenovo is a tech company best known for its personal computers and laptops. But other than that, they also offer well-made and competitively priced smartphones, servers, electronic storage devices and other great gadgets. Meanwhile Motorola, is popular for its range of innovative smartphones. Who could forget the first ever clamshell phone in the 90s, the Motorola StarTAC or the super sleek Motorola Razr in the mid 2000s?

Earlier this year, it was announced that Lenovo will be acquiring the Motorola brand and its portfolio of mobile phones: Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and the DROIDTM series, as well as the future Motorola product roadmap, thus making Lenovo the world’s third largest smartphone maker. And with the recent completion of the acquisition, Lenovo CEO and chairman Yang Yuanqing has this to say, “Today we achieved a historic milestone for Lenovo and for Motorola—and together we are ready to compete, grow and win in the global smartphone market…Lenovo has a clear strategy, great global scale and proven operational excellence.  Motorola brings a strong presence in the U.S. and other mature markets, great carrier relationships, an iconic brand, a strong IP portfolio and an incredibly talented team.  This is a winning combination.”

So what does this mean for Motorola? With the goal to strengthen the brand in mind, the focus will now shift to Moto and its high-end handsets. Moto fans will also be happy to know that the iconic M symbol will be maintained but will sport the blue Lenovo logo.

With the strengths of both companies, the partnership can only mean stronger foothold in both emerging and mature markets.

But wait there’s more. Google, who has acquired the American telco company a couple of years back, will still maintain ownership of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio. Who knows what more could come out of this powerhouse collaboration?

Watch out world, there’s a new and improved kid in town!
