Little Nightmares 2 Can Easily Be the Video Game of Summer 2021

Time to stay home and settle in for a good scare

Little Nightmares II is a lesson in successful sequels. The latest installment of the suspense-adventure game, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment on February 11, is more of the same stuff of nightmares—but with noteworthy upgrades.

Clearly, in the four years since the original video game debuted, developer Tarsier Studios was able to round up all the best elements loved by fans, play them up and improve them further. In Little Nightmares II, hauntingly eerie silences, masterfully-crafted jump scares and even more sinister villains await players.

Unlike the first game, players this time assume the role of a new character named Mono, a young boy trapped “in a world that has been distorted by the humming transmission of a distant tower,” in Little Nightmares II. The original game’s protagonist Six still takes part here, but only as the guide to Mono as he sets out to discover the dark secrets of The Signal Tower.

The best of both horror storylines and puzzle games collide in Little Nightmares II. To advance on this journey, one must figure out ways to navigate the path by solving all types of puzzles while sidestepping traps and creatures. In its chapters, players have to “outsmart the sadistic Teacher, survive the bloodthirsty Hunter and escape other hair-raising characters.”

Apart from the mission at hand, Little Nightmares II presents an entire world one can get lost in. Taking on the first chapter, what immediately stands out is the stunning game environment filled with rich graphics and paired with impressive sound design. Spooky as they are, they make this game beautiful. The upgrade to a two-and-a-half-dimensional perspective is a fun bonus that makes the gaming experience even better, too.

From the nightmarish yet realistic down to the absolutely horrifying and surreal, the Little Nightmares II setting is where players can settle in for a good scare. All in all, it’s an unnerving place to be—whether you are running for your life or hiding for your life as Mono.

Little Nightmares II is available for Microsoft Windows, Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox. Versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are set to be released later this year.
