Why These New Phones Are Samsung's Next Breakthrough

Meet the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the Samsung Galaxy S20

We have our fair share of modern-day traditions. For instance, there’s Valentine’s Day, which signals an upswing in love—or something else—in the air. There’s International Coffee Day, during which we bask in café discounts and recognize that caffeine can indeed save lives. And then there are occasions like Samsung’s Unpacked event, which is arguably one of the annual highlights in the tech world. During this conference, the world hits pause and expands its wishlist to accommodate Samsung’s freshest releases.

This year’s Unpacked event was no different. Setting a new level of tech thirst, Samsung unveiled two of its newest smartphones: the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Z Flip.

Galaxy Z Flip

Picking up where the Galaxy Fold left off, Samsung finally gave the world a closer look at the new Galaxy Z Flip. Unlike the Fold’s lengthwise configuration, the Z Flip folds horizontally across its middle like the clamshell phones of decades past. While this aspect may strum up feelings of nostalgia, the rest of the Z Flip’s capabilities are impressively futuristic.

But first: the basics. Measuring at 6.7 inches with hardly any bezels, the Galaxy Z Flip has an aspect ratio of 22:9, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in storage. The hinge point in the ultra-thin glass can withstand being folded up to 200,000 times.

When folded in half, the Z Flip transforms into an ultra-compact device with a functional information display on the outer. In its folded state, the phone is also capable of snapping photos. Similar to a laptop, Flex Mode allows the phone to be opened at various angles to allow various functions.

While not quite as flashy as the Z Flip, Samsung’s Galaxy series got its annual upgrade by way of the 6.2-inch Galaxy S20, 6.7-inch S20 Plus, and 6.9-inch S20 Ultra.

Leveling up some of the key features crucial to every smartphone, Samsung’s new releases amp up battery life and improved display. In terms of battery, Galaxy S20 weighs in at 4,000 mAh, the S20 Plus at 4,500 mAh, and the S20 ultra at 5,000 mAh, while all three are fixed with a 120Hz AMOLED display to improve the gaming and video experience. All the S20 models have 12 GB of RAM, while the storage options vary per model: the S20 comes with 128 GB, while the S20 Plus and Ultra models are available with 128 and 256 GB storage.

Hinging on how dependent this generation has become on their smartphone cameras, the Galaxy S20 called for an overhaul. The entire S Series’ camera system as we know it was rebuilt and now features improved low-light capabilities and sharper, crisper details. The Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus feature a 64-megapixel main camera, while the S20 Ultra’s boasts of an impressive 108 megapixels. The zoom capabilities across all three phones are also worth taking note of: the Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus are equipped with 30x zoom, while the S20 Ultra goes beyond the extra mile with its 100x hybrid optic zoom capacity.

Filmmakers and cinemaphiles, rejoice: Samsung’s latest addition to its S Series includes major upgrades to its video features, too. All the S20 models are capable of 8K video recording for unparalleled quality. Pro Mode, a video feature once available in earlier S Series models, is also being reprised with this drop to allow users to manually tweak aspects like exposure and shutter speed while recording.

While Samsung’s yearly smartphone launches give us plenty to look forward to each year, 2020’s upgrades mark a large leap from last year’s developments. With the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip as the next jumpoff point, there’s only bigger, brighter and better innovation lying ahead.
