Persona 5 has had players hooked since the day it was announced—which was way back in 2013 by the way. The game was released in Japan in September 2016, but just launched in other countries last month. The wait was agonizing, but it has thus far been worth it. So. Worth. It.
Let’s start with the story.
In Persona 5, players take on the role of the main protagonist as he starts his journey as the new student of Shujin Academy in Tokyo. During the day, he’s a typical high school student who goes to class, hangs out with his friends and does sports. But as players will quickly find out, he’s so much more than standard.
Nicknamed the Joker, the protagonist leads the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, which is a group of youngsters who steal the hearts of corrupt individuals. The goal is to try and change them for the better, but the journey is going to take a lot out of you. Prepare accordingly.
Everything is real.
You live the life of a teenager, so you’ll be going through the everyday motions. That includes studying, exams and the awkward process of making friends. But it’s not just about the gameplay, it’s about the setting, too.
Persona 5 is set in Tokyo, Japan and it definitely shows. More than that, it’s based on real locations and landmarks. It’s basically like taking a trip to the land of the rising sun.
It’s a social game, so be smart about how you spend your time.
To get further in the game, you’ll need to learn how to make friends (read: not acquaintances). By creating and building relationships, bonuses are unlocked and new story sequences unfold. When you gather a confidant, you can take them with you when you meet other people if you think that they’ll get along. It will help quicken the entire process.
You can usually take your time and explore.
There’s no other choice but to buckle in, because Persona 5 is a long game. You’ll be playing it for weeks—if not months—so just enjoy the ride. Don’t feel stressed out about finishing it quickly, because that just isn’t possible.
That said, there are segments of the game that need to be completed within a certain time frame. If one is put on you, then follow the deadline or otherwise deal with the repercussions. Each challenge that is presented to you normally needs to be finished within a couple of days.
