Everything We Know So Far About the New PS5

Here’s everything we know so far about Sony’s next-gen console

The era of the PlayStation 4 is coming to an end. Now that the PlayStation 5 has been confirmed, you’re probably wondering how the next-gen console will present a new gaming experience.

Even though we’re still more than a year away from its official release, Sony has already made announcements regarding the specs and features of the device. We’ve heard PS5 rumors in 2019, this guide will tell you everything that has been confirmed this 2020 about the latest innovation.

Upgraded Specs

  • 8-core processor featuring the new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture

Built with an 8-core processor with 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture, the PS5 is slated to become the best performing console from Sony. Rivaling the best gaming laptops and PC setups currently in the market, the processor will give the best gaming experience yet as it will run games faster and operate programs smoothly so you can enjoy the best graphics.

  • Radeon Navi GPU

The PS5 will use the best graphics card currently available in the market. With the help of the Radeon NAVI GPU’s sounding ray-tracing capabilities, the PS5 will make you feel like you’re playing in a movie.

Commonly used in Hollywood visual FX and CGI, ray-tracing technology allows light and sound to bounce around environments more naturally. This way, you can interact with your game’s environment realistically. This will take open-world titles to the next level and transform game graphics from impressive to downright gorgeous.

Paired with the 8-core processor listed above, each game you play will have its own unique experience.

  • 8K TV support

Now that 8K resolution TV screens have arrived, you’ll be able to play your games with the best video quality available. Combined with the ray-tracing features of the Radeon NAVI GPU, the environments and locations you’ll explore in every game will amaze.

  • 3D audio

Audio is just as important as visuals. One big criticism that Sony faced during the early stages of the PS4 is that its audio capabilities didn’t improve as much compared to the PS3. The sound of your PS5 games will now be 3-dimensional instead of just blasting in your ear. If you’re a fan of Battle Royale games, the PS5’s 3D audio feature is a dream come true.

  • SSD storage system

Since games are expected to be more complex, the PS5 is switching from a hard drive to an SSD storage system. You’ll be able to choose which parts of the game you’d like to install and delete everything unnecessary, allowing you to optimize speed and save memory. Since the SSD storage system is estimated to be 19 times faster than traditional SSD, you can say goodbye to slow loading times.

  • Backward compatibility with PS4 games and PSVR hardware

Fortunately, Sony has announced that the PS5 will allow you to play games from the PS4 and is compatible with your old PSVR hardware. Upon its initial release, the number of games and accessories you can buy from the store will be limited. While you’re waiting for more titles and gadgets to come out, you can use old games and tech from the PS4 to keep you entertained for the meantime.

DualShock 5: What Makes this Controller Different?

  • New haptic vibration

Even though the DualShock 5 is similarly structured to its predecessor, using it will be a different experience altogether. Now that the controller is more sensitive and adaptive, the PS5’s controller will ultimately make gaming feel more immersive. A punch will feel solid in your hands, the vibration of a vehicle’s engine will depend on the model you’re driving, and you can experience the different features of a gun.

  • Adaptive triggers

Following the haptic vibration features of the DualShock 5, its adaptive triggers will further elevate your experience. Depending on the game, your controller will add resistance to the action you’re taking. If you’re drawing a bow and arrow, the trigger will resist against you, the further you pull a string. This feature can completely change how gamers feel with racing, fighting and all other kinds of games.

What are the confirmed PS5 games?

  • Godfall

At the Game Awards 2019, Godfall is the first title confirmed by Sony. With flashy character designs, awesome visuals and a feel similar to Destiny, this third-person game is a completely new take on the hack-and-slash genre. Based on the reveal trailer, we can expect that this game will make a strong and lasting impression on its players.

  • Watch Dogs: Legion

One of the most beloved franchises in modern gaming, Watch Dogs’ latest installment will be available in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2020. The game is set in a futuristic post-Brexit London, and current gameplay footage tells us that Legion will be the most impressive Watch Dogs game yet.

With the PS5’s resolution capabilities and controller features, the game’s open world and combat are expected to be on a completely different level.

  • Gods and Monsters

The creators of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is coming up with a completely new game. Gods and Monsters was officially announced in 2019’s E3, and even though there is still little information available, Ubisoft is confident that it will deliver upon release. As an open-world game based on mythology, the title’s overall graphics and design will further be highlighted by the PS5.

  • Rainbow Six Quarantine

Good news for FPS enthusiasts: Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Quarantine will also be available on the PS5. Compared with the previous titles in the franchise, Quarantine feels significantly different. Judging from the trailer, it’s safe to assume that the game is set in the not too distant future. With the PS5’s adaptive triggers and haptic vibration, it’s expected that shooter games such as this will feel more immersive.

  • Other Games

At this point, other PS4 releases in 2020, such as The Last of Us 2 and The Ghost of Tsushima, will likely have its own upgraded PS5 versions. Big titles such as God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are also assumed to have their sequels available on the upcoming console. Expect more titles to be announced in the coming days, so always be on the lookout.

Other Exciting News

  • PS VR

As previously mentioned, Sony has confirmed that their next console will be compatible with current models of PlayStation VR. Even though there has been no official announcement, rumors are circulating that Sony is currently producing PSVR 2.

  • Price

On its official launch, both the PS4 and PS4 Pro came at a standard retail price of $399 and £349, respectively. Given the specs and features, the PS5 will understandably cost higher than its predecessors. Leaks and rumors have suggested that the console will be priced around the $499 mark.

When should we expect the PS5?

  • Holiday 2020

No official date has been announced, but Sony says that we can expect the console to drop around the holiday season. The PS3 and PS4 were released in November 2006 and 2013 respectively. We can expect the PS5 to hit the shelves at a similar date. It’s also not unusual to release new devices and games during the holiday season. Hopefully, you’ll be able to afford the PS5 with your Christmas bonus!
