Strategic War Games You'll Love
From pen-and-paper to mindblowing HD, Viking-themed plots and Wormfare, these are the war games to play
Battleship

Play on: Playstation 4 and Xbox One
There are but a few phrases more satisfying to hear than “You sunk my battleship!” Once a pen-and-paper guessing game turned iconic board game, Battleship sails again in the era of HD video games, specifically on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
The technological upgrade allows playing online against people from other countries, as well as features unique powers to elevate the whole gaming experience. The core is still the same, but now you can actually watch enemy fleets be blasted to smithereens in glorious next-gen graphics.
Now that you've re-awakened your thirst for blowing up things and, well, strategy, here are other modernized tactical games to try.
The Banner Saga

Play on: Playstation 4, Xbox One, OS X, iOS, Android, Linux, Microsoft Windows
If you have a penchant for Vikings or are a big fan of Game of Thrones then The Banner Saga should be at the top of your must-play games. The Viking-themed RPG with turn-based combat engagements involves foremost logic but will tug on your various emotions, too. How? By allowing players to build relationships with characters through conversation choices that may or may not lead to your defeat. In any case you do fail, you will just have to deal with the consequences and remember the brave souls you lost in battle.
Pro tip: Leave your enemies with 1 or 3HP left. Since it's a turn-based game, killing characters in one blow will let your opponent move his unharmed units on every turn. But leaving an enemy with characters with 1HP will not cause you any serious damage and will force your opponent to waste his every turn.
Risk: Urban Assault

Play on: Playstation3, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360
The Ubisoft-adapted popular political/military board game for the Playstation 4 is now available for digital download on PC. In order to win a game, you need to build several town halls, kill your enemy’s commanding unit or take control of all the territories on the map. The game makes use of dice rolls just like the board game, so like Battleship, the success of your attacks will partly be determined by luck. As any Risk player knows however, territory can go back and forth endlessly so it’s important to know how to spread your troops.
Pro tip: Always attack with more units than your target territory has. Defending units will always win if you roll the same number, so an even fight is actually to your disadvantage if you’re the one advancing. Never gamble away troops! Risk is ultimately a war of efficiency.
Worms W.M.D

Play on: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows
For something a little lighter—but no less explosive—look no further than Worms W.M.D. An artillery strategy game part of the famous Worms series, its gameplay style is much like Worms Armageddon but in 2D interface. The latest version features useable vehicles and buildings that the cute but deadly characters can enter, the ability to craft new weapons gathered from special crates and disassembled weapons as well as improved artillery that cause fiery explosions. All in all, great new features combined with classic elements like fan favorite weapon Holy Hand Grenade make for a seriously fun game.
Pro tip: For weapons you think might not be as effective, break it down and use the dismantled parts to create something deadlier. Just make sure to do so during your opponent's turn.
