FundSpace Teams Up with RFC to Reach Underserved MSMEs

BANNER CAPTION: In photo (L-R): Donald Francis Chiong, RFC President and CEO and Martin Luchanco, FundSpace’s Entrepreneur in Residence, seal the deal on their partnership to bring financing services to underserved MSMEs.

FundSpace, a loan aggregator under Globe’s 917Ventures, has partnered with Radiowealth Financing Company (RFC), a seasoned non-bank financial institution, to offer new financing options including chattel mortgage and real estate loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The joint effort aims to expand access to financial services for underserved local businesses, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs to secure financing.

Through the partnership, SMEs can now obtain loans offered by RFC through FundSpace, ranging from ₱300,000 to ₱5,000,000, with terms from 3 to 36 months and interest rates of 1.92% for Chattel Mortgages and 2.25% for Real Estate Mortgages. Auto and Medical loans are also available.

FundSpace's platform streamlines the loan application procedure, enabling applicants to conveniently choose their preferred loan and financial partner, for a seamless application experience.

The collaboration comes at a pivotal moment for RFC as it celebrates its 60th anniversary and seeks to expand its offerings in the Philippine financing market.

"Despite our long history, we have only reached a small segment of the market in need of small loan financing, such as tricycle drivers, sari-sari stores, and market vendors. This year, we are aggressively pursuing that,” said Donald Francis Chiong, President and CEO of RFC. “We are very honored and privileged to partner with such a distinguished company [Globe Group], which has an excellent reputation for its nationwide reach.”

RFC specializes in micro-financing, serving the underserved market—a segment often overlooked by the financial world, especially banks. Its goal is to connect with and create more opportunities for underprivileged Filipinos.

Meanwhile, FundSpace works alongside reputable financing institutions such as RFC to present a diverse range of financing options tailored to meet the requirements of various companies, furthering its goal of making capital more accessible to SMEs.

“Our partnership with RFC represents a significant step for FundSpace and the Filipino SME sector. By adding RFC’s loan products to our platform, we aim to boost more business’ growth and foster further financial inclusion,” said Martin Luchangco, FundSpace Entrepreneur-in-Residence.

Eligible applicants, including Filipino citizens above 21 years with at least one year of business operation, can visit fundspace.ph to begin the application process with RFC.

Bicol University Taps Globe Business to Drive Academe Innovation - Globe Newsroom

Bicol University Taps Globe Business to Drive Academe Innovation

As Bicol Region’s leading tertiary institution, Bicol University (BU), for the past 50 years, has solidified its premier reputation by consistently implementing its core values of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service in its students, teachers, staff, and community. Amid today’s changing times and growing digital landscape, the university continues to thrive through its drive for innovation with the help of a strong partnership with technology enabler Globe Business.

Like many other institutions who faced challenges that arose from the pandemic, Bicol University realized the need for more robust digital solutions to strengthen their operational capacity as they aim to keep improving and to continuously deliver quality education amidst all adversities.

“Technology brought us all together: administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders,” says Aris Ordoñez,  Bicol University’s ICT director. “The pandemic held us back a little, but did not totally limit us. Technology provided us a way to continue what we have started despite the challenges of the times.”

Specifically, what helped Bicol University take its business forward were two critical Globe Business digital solutions: M360 and Zoom for Education.

M360 is a web-based, multi-channel messaging platform that allows you to send branded messages with a sender ID instead of a mobile number, which builds trust and credibility for your recipients. Top private and public universities across the country use M360 to send out important announcements to their students, faculty members, and administrators.

Bicol University used this to connect with their school community during their vaccination campaign. They also use it for internal and external communication among stakeholders to send out memos, invitations, announcements of academic meetings and activities like enrollment, upcoming school programs. These SMS blasts are completely customizable, making it easy for Bicol University to tailor fit its messaging to its audience.

Meanwhile, Zoom for Education is a popular video conferencing tool that creates better engagement among students, faculty, and staff, fostering a collaborative learning environment for everyone. It is currently being enjoyed by a handful of academes nationwide, including private schools and state universities.

Bicol University used Zoom for Education during the height of distance learning to accommodate up to 1000 attendees with a large meeting room add-on. This helped them to continue delivering quality education through online platforms and conducting meetings or events with bigger audiences.

With these tools, Ordoñez says Bicol University is now more confident to face a tech-driven future as the school continues to shape the country’s next topnotchers in various fields of academic expertise.

“Technology and digitalization has always been a part of Bicol University. We always aim to improve in this aspect, and our ultimate goal is to become an ingenious campus on top of being a world-class university,” Ordoñez adds.

Globe Business, on the other hand, will continue, through this partnership, to fulfill its mission of championing solution-based services to schools in order to restore the hope that education brings to Filipino students and their families.

“The pandemic became one of the catalysts for many institutions to discover new ways of learning, operating and collaborating through digitalization,” says KD Dizon, MSME Group Head, Globe Business. “With our digital solutions and services, we aim to support the education sector in creating a more empowered and future-proof learning environment to uplift the lives of Filipinos.”

917Ventures' Customized Digital Solutions for MSMEs - Globe Newsroom

917Ventures Transforms MSMEs with Capitan's Customized Digital Solutions

Capitan, an initiative of 917Ventures, has launched a suite of digital solutions to help micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) grow their businesses.

These solutions include digital marketing, e-commerce, messaging, and financing services provided by 917Ventures portfolio companies RUSH, m360 and DeepSea, seed venture FundSpace, and partners ChatGenie and Taxumo.

Capitan understands the business context of its clients and chooses digital solutions that match their current needs, efficiently implementing them on their behalf.

Carla Sy Su, Capitan Entrepreneur-in-Residence, said, "We aim to be the growth partner of MSMEs who can boost their businesses through the right digital solutions. We realize that MSMEs are diverse and have different needs, so our role is to guide and enable their digital journey, whether it’s in growing through ecommerce, digital marketing, online funding and more."

MSMEs are an important pillar of the economy that constitutes 99% of all businesses in the country. But the majority hold back from going digital as they consider this costly and feel that they lack capabilities to do so.

Through Capitan, MSMEs now have a digitalization partner that can help them increase awareness and sales via marketing services, make sales processes more efficient through online selling, and expand businesses through loans and financial services.

Capitan clients can boost awareness and sales by implementing better digital marketing strategies and campaigns that help them stand out. In addition, m360 provides targeted messaging to clients, while RUSH offers e-commerce solutions that enable merchants to easily and efficiently sell online with built-in SMS alerts, payment solutions, and logistics. Meanwhile, FundSpace helps clients expand their businesses through digital loans and offers.

Capitan offers a free trial for its digital marketing product. Clients can then upgrade to various packages for digital marketing such as Lite (₱2,500/month), Advanced (₱5,000/month), Pro (₱7,500/month), and Scale (₱10,000/month). These packages offer different levels of social media channel review, comprehensive marketing strategy, Facebook page enhancement, content designs and postings, Facebook Ads credits, and SMS Marketing Campaign.

Several enterprises that have utilized Capitan's packages have shared their success stories.

One of them is Aspire DeZign Lab, an early-stage company offering architecture and design services. Being a two-person team, the owners needed help managing their social media accounts so they could focus on client meetings and government registrations. Within the first month of availing Capitan's Advanced package, Aspire DeZign Lab was able to secure a contract through Facebook, raising its hopes to acquire more clients and even expand into construction next year.

One-year-old online business Solid Steaks, meanwhile, initially relied on referrals or word of mouth for customers. After a successful free trial using Capitan, the owner availed of the Lite package. This resulted in a three-fold increase in Christmas sales in 2022. Upon seeing the growth potential of its business, Solid Steaks now plans to enter into reseller/distributor partnerships and become a B2B supplier with the help of Capitan.

Dingras Empanada, another client, is owned by a former cruise cook whose livelihood was affected by the pandemic. Capitan transformed Dingras Empanada's image and made it more credible for potential distributors. The enterprise has since obtained four distributors and is now opening up for franchises, with Capitan preparing materials to promote distribution and franchising. The company has also started a RUSH website to help fulfill growing orders covering new franchise locations.

"We believe that Capitan will be a game-changer for MSMEs. The pandemic has highlighted the need for businesses to have a strong digital presence, and Capitan's digital solutions will help businesses not just survive but thrive in the next normal,” said Iya Valen, Capitan Venture Builder.

Interested customers may book a meeting through the form and choose among the packages that will suit their business objectives.

Globe Makes Waves at Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup

Francisco “Bingo” Matugas II, Surigao del Norte Governor Francisco “Lalo” Matugas, and Globe SVP for Globe Business Peter Maquera

If you've ever wanted to experience the sport of surfing, Siargao is the place to go, and this October, the surfing capital of the Philippines is holding the 25th run of Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup. As a World Surf League (WSL) official event, surfers from all over the world are coming together to show their skills from October 4-9, 2019.

This year, Globe, through its micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) arm Globe myBusiness, is working with the Siargao International Surfing Organizing Committee composed of the office of Rep. Francisco “Bingo” Matugas II, 1st District, Surigao del Norte; Surigao del Norte Provincial Government headed by Gov. Francisco “Lalo” Matugas; and General Luna local government unit led by Mayor Cecilia “Yayang” Rusillon, in an effort to push sustainable tourism and highlight Siargao as one of the best-surfing destinations in the world.

The competition is especially important because surfing is now part of the 2020 Olympics. “The event will give our local surfers much-needed exposure and will help them earn points to qualify for the quadrennial event. Surfing is a sport in which our locals have excelled in. With the proper training and funding, our surfers can help us clinch an Olympic medal,” said Rep. Matugas.

He added: “Considering that this year is the 25th anniversary of the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, we would like to make the event grander and more memorable. We recognize that we cannot do it alone. Globe's valuable support will surely ensure the competition's success.”

Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO, on the other hand, sees Siargao as having a lot of potential to become one of the major tourist destinations in South East Asia, thus the decision to help the growth of Siargao through digitalization and sustainability efforts.

Globe entered into a strategic partnership with the Department of Tourism recently for the promotion and digital transformation of the Philippine Tourism industry with Siargao as a showcase.

“We came in with a very long-term view for Siargao. We started with bringing connectivity to General Luna just in time to support this major surfing competition and we hope that the world stage will see this. Connectivity starts the transformation in many communities. For tourism, our guests from other countries and even local tourists can now instantly share their experiences via social media. We know that people love to document their travels around the island and talk positively about their experience through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms,” he said.

At the same time, Globe set up an Ecobooth at Cloud 9 that serves as a hub for environmental awareness conversation and sharing of best practices on how to protect and preserve the environment, particularly marine biodiversity. Anyone can visit the Ecobooth to exchange their plastic bags and plastic bottles with an eco bag. They can also get exciting freebies like a water tumbler and metal straws if they avail of GoSAKTO promos. Those who signed up as volunteers for the Oct 5 Siargao Beach Clean-Up also received a Globe Eco-Kit.

Thousands of tourists flock to Siargao every year to experience the surf and sand. According to the DOT, tourism industries on the island of Siargao have significantly increased in the past five years.

Siargao has been named the Best Island in the World for 2019 by Condé Nast Traveler for its pristine waters, white sandy beaches, mangrove forests, and authentic island vibe. Siargao, however, became famous first for its unbelievable waves and was already dubbed as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines and the 5th Best Surfing Spot in the world even before being acknowledged by Condé Nast Traveler.

For the past 24 years, the island has hosted the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, a tour sanctioned by the World Surf League—the governing body for professional surfers. Last year, the event attracted 128 competitors from 20 countries, all battling for a spot on the Championship Tour. The event was broadcast in over 40 countries and WSL's passionate fan base tuned in across various platforms to watch the event. A total of more than 8.5 million people were reached in both local and global press coverage.

The impact of the event on local tourism was also significant. The majority of competitors brought a partner, parent, or friend. It was estimated that the local economy gained approximately US242,400 from the event.

Lopez (middle right) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Cuison Maglaya (rightmost) and Globe myBusiness Marketing Services Head Mary Gaile Guevarra (leftmost) as witnesses

With the shared mission of empowering Filipino business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, Globe myBusiness and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have teamed up to bring technology closer to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Philippines.

Globe myBusiness, the MSME arm of Globe Telecom, and DTI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that aims to empower MSMEs through technological solutions. DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez and DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Cuison Maglaya graced the contract signing, along with Globe myBusiness Vice President for Marketing Debbie Obias and Globe myBusiness Marketing Services Head Mary Gaile Guevarra.

Under this partnership, Globe myBusiness Academy will serve as a one-stop platform for information dissemination about top-notch digital solutions and government services that can help businesses thrive in competitive industries.

Moreover, Globe myBusiness will aid in spreading awareness about DTI’s services and the DTI Negosyo Center through its digital platforms and its various workshops, seminars, and conferences, thus giving entrepreneurs access to resources that can help innovate their business operations.

Globe, UC Hold PRISM Digital Literacy Training Program for Teachers in the Visayas | Newsroom | Globe

Globe, UC Hold PRISM Digital Literacy Training Program for Teachers in the Visayas

PHOTO CAPTION: Globe PRISM participants in Cebu

Globe Telecom, in partnership with the University of Cebu (UC), recently held the culminating activity for the Visayas leg of PRISM, a digital literacy training program designed to equip private school teachers with technological skills for effective classroom teaching.

This is in line with Globe Telecom’s sustainability commitment to empower every Filipino with world-class learning through technology in response to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 to “ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.”

“These days, it is imperative for teachers to learn how to use information and communications technology (ICT) tools in the classroom if they want to motivate students to learn and to help increase their skills for entrepreneurship and employment. The changing times mean that teachers need to continuously adapt to their evolving role. Through this program, we are assisting the teachers in discovering new ways in which they can foster creative and critical thinking among the students,” said Michelle Tapia, Globe Advisor and Head of Education Strategy & Innovation.

The partnership with the University of Cebu has proved to be a natural fit, sharing the same vision in technology’s critical role in the 21st century. Dr. Anna Liza B. Son, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of UC said, “We are happy to host the Visayas leg of PRISM. UC, one of the leading universities in the region, continues to democratize quality education guided by the core values of innovation, camaraderie, alignment, respect, and excellence (ICARE). As education becomes increasingly competitive, UC believes that ICT is a catalyst to respond effectively to society’s demands. This challenge has steered the university to implement a number of initiatives related to ICT. Our mission is to equip our teachers with knowledge, skills, and desirable attitudes to technology utilization which will benefit the educational system. We firmly believe that if we train and develop our people, this will reflect in the quality of graduates that we produce.”

The pressing need for digital learning skills prompted Globe early this year to reach out to 1,000 educators from all over the country. Of the number, 140 teachers came from the Visayas region. The program was participated by representatives from the University of Cebu, Cebu International School, Holy Name University, Negros Mission Academy, Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu, Sacred Heart School- Hijas de Jesus, Santa Isabel International School, St. Joseph College, University of Negros Occidental- Recoletos, University of San Carlos, University of St. La Salle, St. Paul University Dumaguete, and Silliman University.

Through PRISM, the selected teachers underwent a three-week professional development program conducted by Globe. It included a two-day immersive bootcamp, distance project-based learning, and personalized coaching. A key component of the program is the Brightspace Integrated Learning Platform where the teachers underwent distance learning for three weeks with access to the global Brightspace Community and multimedia resources to guide them through the learning process as well as a seamless platform to collaborate with learning coaches and teachers in real time. For the culminating activity, the teachers were invited to showcase various projects on technology-enabled instruction and content development.

PRISM is supported by Globe myBusiness whose mission is to help transform Philippine schools and empower every Filipino with world-class learning through technology. “We want to create a better education system through an ecosystem of enablers. We want to impact the lives of the students in the best way that we can. But first, we have to train the teachers on the effective use of technology to encourage 21st century learning in the classroom,” said Derrick Heng, Senior Advisor, Globe myBusiness Group.

Teachers who attended the PRISM Digital Literacy Program were nominated by both Globe and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC). The PEAC National Secretariat processed the nominations submitted by schools nationwide while a Vetting Committee, composed of two (2) representatives from the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), a DepEd Regional Director, and the PEAC Executive Director, was set in place to closely vet the nominated teachers.

PRISM was earlier conducted in Metro Manila and Naga City while Pampanga and Cagayan de Oro City will follow within the first half of the year.
