The film captures bravery and treachery in a country at war. It starts in 1898, with Luna commanding the Philippine Republican Army. The United States troops defeated the Spaniards and are seizing control of the country.

Luna faces a global superpower, rivals from within his own ranks, and his political adversary, Emilio Aguinaldo. The story leaves you with deep respect and empathy for an imperfect man who never gave up his beliefs.

Heneral Luna won several Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) and Gawad Urian awards.

Gomburza (2023)

The film garnered several awards and nominations from FAMAS, the Metro Manila Film Festival, and the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers.

Stream Gomburza on Netflix.

Manuel Quezon

These books and movies offer an eye-opening glimpse into the life and legacy of the Philippines' first Commonwealth President.

Quezon’s Game

In 1938, Quezon chose to accept Jewish refugees escaping the horrors of the Holocaust. The Philippines was still a struggling American colony, and the United States was already refusing refugees. Despite the odds and limited resources, Quezon helped save over 1,200 lives.

Thanks to Quezon’s decision, the Philippines is the only ASEAN country with a special friendship with Israel. Pinoys can travel to the country without a visa.

Catch Quezon’s Game on iWantTFC. If you want to get more details on how the Philippines helped the Jews, listen to his grandson Manuel L. Quezon III’s speech during the 2008 Israel Congress.

8 Life Lessons Learned from Star Wars: Wisdom from a Galaxy Far, Far Away

8 Life Lessons Learned from Star Wars: Wisdom from a Galaxy Far, Far Away

The Star Wars saga isn't just about epic battles and intergalactic adventures. The underlying themes of hope, resilience, courage, and love are universal, even if lightsaber duels and spaceship attacks may seem distant from your everyday life. The characters’ inspiring stories can empower you to face your challenges head-on.

Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the universe, discover these life lessons for guidance and inspiration in your daily life.

1. Make Mindful Choices

From Senator to Sith: Palpatine’s declaration, “I am the Senate,” foreshadows his descent into tyranny.

Palpatine's journey from a well-intentioned senator to a tyrannical emperor demonstrates how unchecked ambition can gradually erode values. Have you ever bent the rules a little to get ahead? Or maybe you've turned a blind eye to certain situations to avoid conflict? Be mindful of small temptations that can lead you toward compromising your integrity.

Jedi Tip: To protect your principles, recognize situations that tempt you to cut corners or prioritize personal gain. Set clear boundaries regarding your non-negotiables and question any justifications for potentially unethical behavior.

2. Don't Let Anger Control You

Anakin's tragic fall to the dark side embodies the corrupting influence of unchecked anger.

Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side in Star Wars illustrates the dangers of unchecked anger. While your everyday frustrations might not lead to galactic domination, uncontrolled anger can still wreak havoc on your relationships, career, and overall well-being.

Jedi Tip: Identify your triggers and recognize the physical and emotional signs of anger. Develop healthy coping mechanisms like deep breathing or exercise. Communicate your feelings calmly and directly. Remember, anger is a natural human emotion that doesn't have to control you.

3. Find Balance Between Logic and Emotion

This lightsaber duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan showcases the destructive power of Anakin's anger, fear, and hatred.

Star Wars shows the dangers of emotional extremes. The Jedi, with their strict suppression of feelings, and the Sith, consumed by anger and passion, offer valuable lessons about finding equilibrium.

Think about it: you might logically know that staying up late is a bad idea, but the emotional pull of finishing that binge-worthy show is hard to resist.

Jedi Tip: Find the middle ground. Allow yourself to feel emotions and understand their source. Use logic to guide your decisions, but consider the impact of your actions on others through empathy.

4. Believe in Yourself to Unlock Your Potential

This scene from A New Hope shows Luke trusting in the Force and his abilities to make the shot that destroys the Death Star.

Luke Skywalker, starting as an unassuming farmhand and evolving into a legendary Jedi Master, shows that heroism isn't reserved for the chosen few. Everyone has the potential for greatness within.

Jedi Tip: To unleash your inner hero, recognize and celebrate your strengths. Challenge your inner critic by countering self-doubt with positive affirmations. Set goals, take action, and learn from challenges along the way.

5. Seek Guidance to Grow Stronger

“Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try." Yoda's guidance focused on commitment, perseverance, and unwavering belief in your abilities.

Just as Luke sought Yoda's wisdom, seeking guidance from experienced mentors can illuminate your path and help you navigate challenges. Luke's initial arrogance hindered his progress until he learned to embrace humility. He faced numerous failures but persevered, embracing failure as a learning opportunity.

Jedi Tip: Find your Yoda! To achieve personal growth, actively seek advice from mentors. Practice humility by being open to feedback and cultivate resilience to overcome setbacks and challenges.

6. Turn Challenges into Opportunities for Growth

Luke vs. Vader: A son confronts his father and his inner darkness in a fight for redemption.

Luke Skywalker's confrontation with Darth Vader in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi isn't just about battling the villain. It symbolizes facing your deepest fears and insecurities. Just as Luke overcomes his fear of Darth Vader and his potential for darkness, you can also confront your challenges and emerge stronger.

Jedi Tip: To conquer your fears, identify them. Take an honest look at what's holding you back. Challenge your assumptions—are they based on reality or negative self-talk? Facing your fears is not about eliminating them. It's about acknowledging and understanding them, and finding ways to move forward.

7. Embrace Second Chances

Darth Vader finds redemption as he sacrifices himself to save his son, Luke, from the emperor.

Darth Vader’s sacrifice to save his son, Luke, symbolizes the transformative power of change and redemption. It’s a reminder that even those who strayed far from the path of good can find their way back.

Jedi Tip: Embrace second chances and remember that every day is an opportunity for a new beginning.

8. Don't Let Your Past Define You

Rey’s journey from Jakku scavenger to Jedi shows that your past doesn't define you.

Rey Skywalker's journey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a powerful reminder that you’re not bound by your past or societal expectations. Like Rey, who rises from a scavenger on Jakku to a powerful Jedi, you can create your destiny, regardless of where you come from or what you've been through.

Jedi Tip: Embrace your potential to create the life you desire. Identify your values, set goals, and take action. Learn from your past and surround yourself with supportive people. You're the author of your life, so create a story filled with resilience, growth, and fulfillment.

7 Blockbuster Hits With Strong Female Leads - go!

7 Blockbuster Hits With Strong Female Leads

For your Women’s Month 2022 movie marathon

Women’s Month is here, reminding us that the women in our lives and those who’ve made and continue to make history (#BreakTheBias!) are worth celebrating. But even in smaller ways that seem like indirect contributions, we can see the importance of women showing up, of taking up space, and of telling important stories. This is worth celebrating, too, of course.

Now more than ever, female representation is crucial to advocating for gender equality and improving the image of women. This is especially the case in media, where films can strongly impact how individuals think and feel.

With that in mind, see the list ahead as an invitation. Celebrate Women’s Month—perhaps with a Globe At Home plan or an upgrade to GFiber, so you can binge-watch these titles and other girl power films.

Scroll through for movies with strong female leads you can enjoy with entertainment subscriptions with Globe.

Lady Bird (2017)

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts

Lady Bird tells the story of high school senior Christine who undergoes trials of love and self-discovery while struggling with her relationship with her mother. Over the course of her senior year, she dreams of escaping to a prestigious college on the East Coast—but not without realizing a few things first. The movie tackles themes of appreciating your roots and being grateful to those who have supported you.

"Lady Bird" is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Roma (2018)

Starring: Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Diego Cortina Autrey

Roma is a drama set in the 1970s that follows the life of a middle-class family’s Mixteco housekeeper named Cleo. As Cleo discovers she is pregnant, the failing relationship between the heads of their family becomes clear.

This heartfelt film touches on social and class inequalities, as subtle hints show the family’s depreciation for Cleo’s work. It also does a great job featuring other factors prevalent at that time, like systematic oppression and racism.

Stream "Roma" Netflix.

Little Women (2019)

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet

Based on the classic novel written by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women tells the tale of four sisters and their journey toward womanhood following the civil war. The film shows each sibling’s course in finding love, while grappling with concepts of self-worth, purpose and family.

Out of the six adaptations thus far, Greta Gerwig’s version is perhaps one of the most heartfelt yet—with its less linear timeline, greater emotional arc, and overall inspiring themes still relevant to many women today.

Stream "Little Women" on Amazon Prime Video.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal

Wonder Woman is the second installment featuring the DC Comics classic superhero. As Diana Prince maintains a secret identity on Earth, evil forces arise and destroy everything in their way to gain power.

This film is not only a great one for superhero fans, but women evidently are sent a strong message from Diana. Wonder Woman’s character shows unwavering resolve and morals that can help inspire women, young and old, to do the same.

"Wonder Woman 1984" is available to stream on HBO GO.

Charlie’s Angels (2000)

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu

Charlie’s Angels features three strong female leads who use their talents, skillsets and brains while in their work for a private detective agency in California. While there are multiple adaptations of this classic title, the 2000 big-screen version is still the most iconic among the bunch.

The film screams female empowerment through thrilling action scenes, clever dialogue and inspiring performances.

Stream "Charlie’s Angels" on Netflix.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Jennifer Coolidge

Legally Blonde is about overcoming stereotypes while maintaining the confidence to be true to yourself. A beloved classic, this movie has a lot of cleverly written scenes that will make you laugh out loud.

In the movie, the main character, Elle Woods, eagerly waits for her boyfriend to propose. But when he tells her that she is not smart enough for him, she applies to Harvard University to prove herself and win him back.

"Legally Blonde" is available on Amazon Prime Video.

A League of Their Own (1992)

Starring: Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell

The plot of A League of Their Own centers on Geena Davis’ character, Dottie Hinson. This comedy is a fictional twist on the story of an All-American professional girl’s baseball team that struggles to succeed in the big league. This oldie but goodie features relatable female characters who show the importance of compassion, teamwork, and, most importantly, girl power.

Stream "A League of Their Own" on Amazon Prime Video.
