A First in PH: Globe, Lynk Hold Successful Satellite SMS Trial

A First in PH: Globe, Lynk Hold Successful Satellite SMS Trial

Innovation brings connectivity to remote areas

Globe recently held a successful end-to-end satellite SMS customer trial in a remote area with no reception in Zambales, a milestone in the company’s initiative to deliver connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).

In the breakthrough test, Globe transmitted text messages using standard phones via Globe and TM SIMs through partner Lynk Global Inc.’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, marking a major breakthrough in providing reliable and inclusive connectivity.

The historic trial marks the first time regular mobile phones on prepaid and postpaid accounts have connected directly to a satellite to send SMS. This is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where many areas remain isolated due to the archipelago’s diverse geographical makeup.

Globe's Technology Strategy and Innovations team conducts a satellite SMS trial at Mapanuepe View Deck, Brgy. Aglao, Zambales.

Globe's Technology Strategy and Innovations team lead the trial using satellite technology for SMS at Mapanuepe View Deck, Brgy. Aglao, Zambales. [L-R] Bryril Alvarez, Solutions Architect; Innah Antoinette Perez, Senior Solutions Architect; and Peter John Custodio, Senior Solutions Architect.

The live demonstration, conducted in a mobile blackspot in Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales, utilized Lynk’s state-of-the-art "cell tower in space" LEO satellites that provide direct-to-standard-phone global connectivity in partnership with Globe.

The test, which used a range of mobile devices, showed that direct-to-phone satellite communication is possible without any modifications to existing devices, allowing for widespread access and affordability.

The innovative achievement highlights Globe’s dedication to expanding coverage, particularly in rural and underserved areas where building traditional cell towers remains a challenge.

"This is a significant step in our mission to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected to the world," said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe.

"By leveraging Lynk Global's low-earth orbit satellite technology, we are breaking barriers and bringing the next wave of solutions to the remotest areas, allowing families, travelers, and businesses to stay closer than ever.”

Globe will hold another trial in different scenarios in Mindanao this month, which will solidify its adoption of this innovative technology. The company plans to fully integrate this technology in its network in order to serve more GIDAs. Globe currently has a presence in over 500 GIDAs across the country.

Globe has consistently led the way in introducing cutting-edge technologies to the country. This customer trial is only the beginning of the company’s vision to incorporate satellite-based communication into its services, further cementing its role as a leader in technological innovation in the Philippines.

Globe Sees Rise in Cable Theft Cases in Greater Manila Area in H1 2024

Seeks closer collaboration with gov’t agencies, LGUs, police for unified front

Globe has reported an 18.6% increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) in the first half of 2024, a concerning uptrend that undermines efforts to expand connectivity amid steadily increasing demand.

From January to June 2024, Globe logged 906 cases of cable theft, a significant rise from 764 cases during the same period in 2023. June had the highest number of cases this year at 169 incidents.

Hotspot areas include Quezon City, where theft incidents affected Globe’s cable segments in Aurora, Project 8, and Roosevelt. Cables within the Las Piñas, Makati, and Manila are also among those frequently targeted.

GMA accounted for about 61.55% percent of the total 1,472 cases logged nationwide in the first half of this year, reflecting a worrying trend of rising cable theft in the metropolis. This escalation poses a serious challenge to Globe's efforts to enhance and expand its network across the region.

"We have seen a concerning increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Metro Manila area, which also hosts a sizable population of our customer base. This means that for every cable cut, our individual customers lose precious hours of productivity, while businesses are deprived of their income potential,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Head of Service Planning and Engineering.

He cited how the impact of fiber cuts could get more amplified in the region as it serves as the country’s economic center and seat of power.

“Fiber cuts are an urgent problem to solve, and we cannot do it alone. Our goal is to deepen our cooperation with government agencies, local government units, barangays and law enforcement authorities so that together, we can tackle this menace and bring perpetrators to justice,” Agustin said.

Globe reiterates its call on the public to be vigilant and report sightings of cable theft incidents to the barangay or police station nearest them.

Globe Prepares Network for Potential Impact of ‘Gener’

Globe Prepares Network for Potential Impact of ‘Gener’

Globe has begun preparations for the potential impact of Tropical Depression Gener, which is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing moderate to intense rains across Luzon this week.

Gener intensified from a low pressure area to a Tropical Depression early Monday morning, prompting state weather bureau PAGASA to raise storm warning signal No. 1 in 11 provinces: Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Apayao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Aurora and Quezon.

PAGASA forecasts that Gener would make landfall in Aurora or Isabela on Tuesday, and then intensify into a tropical storm the following day, when it is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility. The weather bureau warned that the storm could trigger floods and landslides.

Globe has prepositioned technical and support personnel along with critical supplies in areas on the path of the storm in anticipation of its potential effects. Its network facilities are equipped with generators and alternative power sources for backup power in case of commercial power outages.

Globe is also ready to deploy Libreng Tawag, Libreng Charging and Libreng WiFi Services in severely-hit areas where the storm may cause power and service outages.

“We are fully prepared, with our network and teams on high alert, to ensure that our customers remain connected and supported as we anticipate the potential impact of Tropical Depression Gener. Our commitment is to keep services running smoothly, especially in times of need,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Globe urges communities on the path of the storm to store food, water and medicine, prepare first aid kits, emergency light sources and batteries, and to charge their mobile devices and alternative light sources ahead of Gener’s landfall.

Globe also calls on the public to get their weather updates from legitimate and trusted news sources. To help customers access timely and verified weather updates, Globe provides free data access to the website of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Globe Reminds Customers to Follow Safe SIM Registration Procedures

Globe Reminds Customers to Follow Safe SIM Registration Procedures

Globe urges customers to follow safe SIM registration procedures for their own protection as fraudsters continue to find ways to circumvent the SIM Registration Act.

Almost two years since SIM registration became mandatory, new fraud methods continue to emerge targeting vulnerable SIM users. Globe is calling on SIM users to remain vigilant and make safe SIM registration a personal responsibility.

“As much as we prioritize our customers’ safety, we also call on them to be part of the solution against persistent fraud. All things considered, the first line of defense against SIM-related fraud are the SIM users themselves. We hope they follow good personal safety practices to fend off fraud attempts,” said Eric Tanbauco, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) for Globe’s Consumer Mobile Business.

Here are important guidelines to follow when registering a new SIM:

  1. Register only through Globe’s official SIM registration portal.

There are fake websites masquerading as Globe’s official portal. Globe has only one official website, which is accessible through the official SIM Registration platform. Customers may also register their SIMs via the GlobeOne app.

  2. Customers should register their own SIM.

Customers must register their own SIMs to protect their data. Be wary of offers to help register SIMs or having another person register on behalf of the SIM owner. This is a modus to get the SIM users’ personal data.

Registering SIMs is free of charge. Customers must be careful not to take offers of SIM registration assistance for a price, which are prevalent online or even in some retail stores which will charge double the price for a SIM. Using third-party services to register SIMs may compromise customers’ personal data.

Those who need assistance in registering their SIMs may get support from the Globe Store nearest them. They may also request help from a trusted friend or relative.

  3. Watch out for SIMs with tampered packaging.

Some unscrupulous sellers are peddling old SIMs with tampered packaging. This indicates that such SIMs are already used and repackaged as new. Customers must make sure to buy only sealed SIMs.

  4. Do not buy or sell pre-registered SIMs.

Agreeing to register SIMs under one’s name for a fee is illegal. Customers must not involve themselves in this modus, either as the seller or the buyer. Under Section 11 of the SIM Registration Act, those found guilty of selling or transferring a registered SIM may be meted prison time of six months to six years and/or a fine ranging from Php 100,000 to Php 300,000.

Globe remains committed to ensuring that all customers have access to secure and reliable telecommunications services. By following these guidelines, customers can help create a safer mobile environment for everyone.

Globe Accelerates 5G Deployment with 256 New Sites, Expands Global Roaming Presence

Globe Accelerates 5G Deployment with 256 New Sites, Expands Global Roaming Presence

Globe continues to lead the charge in 5G technology deployment across the Philippines, successfully rolling out 256 new 5G sites for the first half of the year, as it solidifies its role as a driving force in the country’s digital transformation.

With this latest build, Globe’s 5G outdoor coverage in the National Capital Region (NCR) now reaches an impressive 98.45%. While in key cities across Visayas and Mindanao, Globe achieved a 5G outdoor coverage rate of 94.19%, underscoring its commitment to bringing cutting-edge technology to more people, no matter where they are.

The 5G coverage expansion underscores Globe's ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of digital connectivity and empower Filipinos with faster, more reliable internet services.

In June 2024, Globe registered over 7 million devices connected to Globe's 5G network, a clear indicator of the growing demand for high-speed mobile data and the company’s ability to meet that demand.

“Our aggressive 5G rollout across the country is a crucial part of our strategy to ensure that the Philippines is at the forefront of digital transformation,” said Joel Agustin, Globe SVP and Head of Service Planning and Engineering. “We are proud to see how our investments are resulting in positive change, enabling our customers to enjoy seamless digital experiences wherever they are.”

In addition to its domestic expansion, Globe has made significant strides on the international front, having forged 5G roaming partnerships with 167 operators across 87 destinations.

These partnerships ensure that Globe customers enjoy high-speed data both in the Philippines and abroad. The move not only enhances user experience but strengthens Globe's position as a global telecom leader.

Globe's 5G network helps power the country’s digital future, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and a more reliable connection, all of which are essential for economic growth and development.

Globe Records 245 Incidents of Cable Theft Per Month Across PH in H1 2024

Globe Records 245 Incidents of Cable Theft Per Month Across PH in H1 2024

Incidents disrupt connectivity, derail network expansion

Globe recorded an average of 245 cable incidents per month in the first half of the year as thieves continue to target internet cable, derailing the company’s efforts to continuously enhance the network

In the first half of 2024, Globe logged 1,472 cases of cable theft across the country, averaging over 245 incidents per month. The highest number of cases occurred in May, with a total of 273 incidents reported.

The Greater Manila Area (GMA), which covers Metro Manila and adjacent areas, saw the highest number of incidents, with a total 906 cases during this period. The Visayas region reported 179 cases, Southern Luzon had 135, Northern Luzon 125, and Mindanao 119 cases.

Persistent cable theft causes significant disruptions in internet connectivity, impacting countless customers who rely on Globe's services for work, education, and everyday activities.

"Cable theft not only disrupts connectivity that our customers heavily depend on for various activities but also sets back our efforts to expand our network reach,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Head of Service Planning and Engineering.

“Each time a thief cuts even one cable for their own selfish motives, hundreds of our customers– individuals and businesses– are affected, including those engaged in the delivery of essential services. The impact is, thus, magnified,” he said.

Connectivity is now a basic and life-enabling service similar to power and water. It has become indispensable in daily life, required for various activities including work, school, livelihood, and entertainment. Cable theft undermines Globe’s efforts to provide reliable connectivity to its customers.

Globe urges the public to be vigilant and to report cases of cable theft to the nearest barangay or police station. By working together, Globe and the community can combat this problem and ensure continuous service for all.

“We’ve received a lot of interest from journalists from across the country with the bigger and wider-reaching GMEA awards this year. Globe Partners with First Gen on Renewable Energy to Advance Net Zero Ambition

Globe Partners with First Gen on Renewable Energy to Advance Net Zero Ambition

Globe has renewed its strategic partnership with First Gen Corporation, a leading power generation company supplying renewable and clean energy in the Philippines, to further its commitment to attaining net-zero emissions by 2050.

Globe recently signed a supply agreement with First Gen Corporation (First Gen) to provide renewable energy for one of its key network facilities of Globe and a data center under the subsidiary ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Philippines) [STT GDC Philippines] sourced from the Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant in Leyte.

Globe signed a supply agreement with First Gen Corporation

The supply agreement was signed by Carlos Lorenzo Vega, Vice President for Power Marketing, Trading and Economics of First Gen, and Carlos Malana, President and CEO of STT GDC Philippines (3rd and 4 th from left, respectively); with (from left) Alexander Fernando, Operations and Fulfillment Head at STT GDC Philippines; Arlene Soriano, Head of Power Marketing and Sales of First Gen; and Globe officials, namely: Raymond Aguilar, Vice President for Enterprise Risk and Corporate Property Management, Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer; and Gerard Ortines, Vice President of Network Services and CAPEX Management.

The partnership will contribute to expanding Globe's Renewable Energy (RE) sites through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) under Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP).

Globe plans to increase the number of facilities powered by renewable energy from the current 29 to nearly 70 within the next two years, more than doubling its clean energy use. First Gen, a key collaborator since 2020, is one of its partners in this endeavor.

“Globe and First Gen share the same vision of a decarbonized and regenerative future where sustainability is ingrained into the organization and operations. We are pleased to continue our partnership and are committed to supporting Globe as it journeys towards greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact,” said Carlos Lorenzo Vega, Vice President for Power Marketing, Economics, and Trading of First Gen.

Raymond Martin Aguilar, Globe’s Vice President for Risk and Property Management, added: "At Globe, sustainability and risk management are core strategies for building business resilience. This partnership with First Gen is a testament to our dedication to these principles."

To seal the alliance, a ceremonial signing was held recently among Globe, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) Philippines, and First Gen. The collaboration involves RE adoption not only for Globe’s high energy utilization facilities but also for STT GDC Philippines’ data centers in Cavite.

The telecom industry, with its substantial energy consumption, especially within core sites, plays a pivotal role in today’s digital age. Globe’s Scope 2 emissions, derived from electricity consumption, have historically accounted for an average of 30% of its total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

To realize its net-zero ambition, Globe took the bold step of transitioning its sites to RE beginning in 2019 despite RE being limited and costlier than fossil fuels. By year-end 2023, approximately 18% of the total energy consumption of Globe, is now powered by RE, avoiding an estimated 77,000 tonnes of GHG emissions.

“As the first publicly-listed company in the Philippines to have approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), this partnership fuels us in our pursuit of our net zero ambitions by greening the network and partnering with sustainability-driven companies,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Globe remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability in the Philippine telecom sector, actively engaging stakeholders and championing industry practices that advance sustainability.
