Globe Donates P5M Worth of Storybooks to Public Schools Nationwide

Taguig City, Philippines—Globe Telecom has made a donation of some 72,000 storybooks worth P5 million to various public elementary schools nationwide to provide a significant boost to one of the most common and recurring challenges that the public school system faces: the limited supply of learning resources.

The project is in partnership with the Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI) through its “100 for 200” campaign, a call for donations whose objective was to distribute 200,000 storybooks.  It is also part of  Globe Telecom’s Global Filipino Schools (GFS) program and the company’s long-term collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) in pushing for a more progressive 21st Century learning environment in public schools nationwide.

During the turnover to AFI, Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu noted that by providing public elementary schools with a complete and wide selection of storybooks for various ages, more students will be encouraged to read more and develop a deep love of reading, a vital and effective element in student development at a young age.

“Developing a good and regular reading habit will go a long way to help improve the literacy and comprehension skills of young learners, which is necessary for them to become competent and educated adults.  Literacy is necessary to provide a brighter future for the children and the country as a whole,” Cu said. “We would like this advocacy to serve as an inspiration for other companies to collaborate with the public education sector to help spread awareness and bring to the fore the value of equipping public schools around the country with proper learning tools and methods.”

All the donated books contain an all-Filipino theme and were written by Filipino authors. They were also screened and curated to be totally aligned for K-12 learning. Aside from the donated storybooks, the teachers of the recipient schools will also undergo a teacher-training program that will enable them to maximize usage of the storybooks and integrate them into the daily learning experience of the students.

A highlight of the partnership ceremony included a storybook reading event with the elementary school kids. The storybook reading was conducted by Globe employees through its skills-based volunteerism program.
