It’s a certified rock n’ roll urban legend, confirmed by their frontman Sting in an interview with The Independent that the Police’s most famous song, Every Breath You Take, isn’t a love song. It’s a song about Cold War spies.
Take another listen at the song’s creepy chorus: “Every breath you take. Every move you make. Every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.”
“I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is,” Sting told the newspaper. “I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.”
Thankfully, over a decades-long career as both the frontman of the Police and a best-selling solo act, Sting has given the world more than a couple of songs that definitely qualify as genuine ballads of love.
