The Latest Power Rangers Movie Is So Current

We loved the Might Morphin Power Rangers then but, more so now

The latest big-screen adaptation of the 90s favorite superhero action TV series has got many feeling nostalgic and all sorts of feels. For those born after the series ended, Power Rangers follows the story of a team of high schoolers recruited and trained to morph into superheroes to save the world. But what was most notable was that Power Rangers was among the first to feature a racially diverse team of superheroes (though Black Ranger could’ve have been Blue and Yellow could have been Pink, you know?). This time around, the new movie is pushing the boundaries even further and we love it! Here’s why:

Yellow Ranger is a fiery Latina and gay.

More than riding the wave of #diversity, movie director Dean Israelite is addressing real adolescent issues by featuring an openly gay Ranger. “For Trini (played by Becky G), really she’s questioning a lot about who she is...She hasn’t fully figured it out yet…The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe,” says Israelite in an interview.

The costumes are no longer color-coded according to ethnicity.

Whether or not it was intended in the original series, it was refreshing to see Power Rangers’ diverse cast in unexpected colors. Chinese-Canadina actor Ludi Lin for instance is taking on the role of Black Ranger and African-American actor RJ Cycler is putting on Blue Ranger’s suit.

The story is somehow different but the same.

We won’t fill you in on the details, but expect the unexpected. Watch the trailer below.
