Nine New Tracks to Check out on Spotify: February 2019

Welcome to love month aka “thank u, next” month aka month of brand-new music

February kicked off with a bang and then some: a wave of new albums on the first of the month (with the next one slated for February 8th), the long-awaited return of indie pop artist Marina, formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds, and a preview of how the 61st Annual Grammy Awards is shaping up to be. Tuning into the local music scene next, February is also proving to be a great month for OPM. We already have Conscious & The Goodness’s Double Tap and Never The Strangers’ Shadow Show on heavy rotation. We haven’t gotten over the magnificent 15-track debut album by IV of Spades quite yet either.

Between helping ourselves to more ClapClapClap!, reeling from the epic concert of BLACKPINK, who for the first time made their way to our area, and counting down to the new era of Ariana Grande, we have these fresh picks for the month of February to listen to. Here are nine tracks you might like, too. Jumpstart your February with go! Magazine’s curation of new releases:

“no space” by Alextbh

Single

Artist on the rise Alextbh, hailed in 2018 by Paper Magazine as Malaysia’s newest queer icon, greets the love month with the playful lyrics and catchy, eargasmic beat of “no space.” A follow-up to his well-received singles, “walls” and “still mine,” Alextbh’s 2019 is looking like the year he takes his sound international: also in February, he joins Filipina artist Jess Connelly on her Asia tour in Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Thailand and Vietnam.

“Life Puzzle” by Arthur Nery

Single

The latest artist to sign on with Kean Cipriano’s music label OC Records (joining UNIQUE, Calein and Bita and The Botflies), we’re keeping our tabs on Arthur Nery. The newcomer’s debut single “Life Puzzle” has only begun to pick up speed and we can’t wait for this track to hit airwaves soon. Listen in for yourself and enjoy:

“7 rings (Remix)” by Ariana Grande feat. 2 Chainz

Album: thank u, next

Pop sensation Ariana Grande surprised fans today with a remix of her latest trap hit “7 rings.” Tapping American rapper 2 Chainz for the collaboration, more unapologetically empowering lyrics were thrown in the mix and gives us hints left and right about the kind of direction Grande is taking her fifth studio album to (thank u, next drops on February 8.)

“Ready to Let Go” by Cage the Elephant

Album: Social Cues

American rock band Cage the Elephant, another act gearing up to release their fifth studio album, gives listeners a taste of their Social Cues sound with their lead single, Ready to Let Go. A different take on love month, this track chronicles a trip taken by lead single Matt Shultz and his wife in which they both realized they needed a divorce. “Sun went down, sun went down over Pompeii / On both sides the vow was broken,” the song begins. “Oh my, my, I'm the one trying / To hide this damage done / One day, all our secrets will be spoken.” Listen to the tragic yet beautiful track below.

“HONEST ENOUGH” by Cautious Clay

Single

As Brooklyn soul singer Cautious Clay wraps his upcoming EP Table of Context, he switches gears and drops a new single HONEST ENOUGH, capping off January and easing us all into Feb. “I feel like it’s easy to be ‘honest enough’ or to not tell the whole truth to someone,” the artist said in an interview with HYPEBEAST. “You can skate by knowing good and well that things are not stable.” Click on to listen to the Medasin-produced song:

“Easy Way Out” by LEISURE

Single

Another January-ender to greet February with, Easy Way Out by Auckland band LEISURE is this month’s pick for easy listening that has us almost craving for summer (a perfect prelude to the five-man band’s sophomore album slated for a summer 2019 release). Hear it here:

“Too Proud” by Broods

Album: Don’t Feed the Pop Monster

Georgia Nott and Caleb Nott of the brother-sister duo Broods let it all hang out in their 2019 album Don’t Feed the Pop Monster. Following a breakup with their record label that felt a lot like a “time in limbo” as Georgia Nott described in an interview, the two spring back on the scene with a warmly received third album. “When it happened we were like, ‘Yes, okay, cool. We can make the kind of music that we want. We can choose where we go now,’” said Nott. “That was exciting but then there’s also that side of it like, ‘Oh, [expletive]. How are we [going to] do this next record without a label?’ It’s kind of crazy how everything can be so up in the air for so long and then within a couple of months everything falls into place.” Listen to “Too Proud” below:

“Moderation” by Florence + The Machine

Single

Here’s the word on love in moderation according to Baroque pop singer-songwriter Florence Welch. “Want me to love you in moderation,” she sings. “Do I look moderate to you?”

Moderation goes hand-in-hand with another single Haunted House, two tracks fans are already excited to listen to live when the English band heads to New York City for the 2019 Governors Ball Music Festival.
