Nothing To Do? Have A Studio Ghibli Marathon

Your weekend is officially booked

Anime fanatic or not, chances are you’ve heard of Studio Ghibli and once of its famed screenwriters and directors, Hayao Miyazaki. The animation studio is popular for churning out movies that hit its audience right at the heart.

Grave Of The Fireflies

In March 1945, siblings Setsuko and Seita are left to secure their house and belongings as American bombers fly overhead. With thousands of bomblets creating fires all around their neighborhood, their mother is horribly burned and dies shortly after. They then have to live under the hand of their aunt, although they eventually decide to leave and move into an abandoned shelter to escape her abuse.

Seita needs to do everything to keep his sister alive.

Howl’s Moving Castle

Sophie is a young milliner who encounters a wizard named Howl on her way to visit her sister. During her journey back, she meets the Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie into a 90-year-old woman. In order to break the curse, she sets off throughout the country and makes friend with a scarecrow she names Turnip Head. They go to Howl’s castle together.

Sophie then sets on an entirely different journey that involves war, magic, self-discovery and of course, romance.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Flying on her broomstick to the port city of Koriko, young witch trainee Kiki leaves home with her talking black cat named Jiji, who is also her familiar spirit. In order to pay for her lodging, Kiki helps a bakery owner, Osono. She eventually opens up a delivery service, where she delivers goods on her broom. Tombo, a boy in the village, tries to pursue Kiki.

Kiki gets sick, loses her powers and can no longer understand Jiji. Will Tombo be the key to getting her life back in place?

The Tale Of Princess Kaguya

When Sanuki no Miyatsuko discovers a miniature girl inside a glowing bamboo shoot, he is convinced that she is a divine being. The girl who they’ve named Kaguya eventually grows and makes friends in the mountain village. When Miyatsuko finds gold and fine cloth in the bamboo grove, he is further convinced that she should be a princess. He moves his family to the capital and Kaguya struggles with life as a noblewoman away from her friends, particularly Sutemaru.

When Kaguya admits that she came from the Moon, who is now calling her back, everyone does what they can to protect her.

The Castle In The Sky

Sheeta, a girl of royal descent, is abducted by government agent Muska, but their airship is attacked by Captain Dola and her air pirate sons who want to obtain Sheeta’s crystal amulet. In the battle, Sheeta falls from the airship and lands in a small mining town. She is found by Pazu, who takes her into his home to recover. Pazu tells Sheeta of a mysterious floating island called Laputa.

The film reaches its climax when it is discovered that Sheeta’s amulet is the key to holding the floating worlds in place.
