Lines From Our Favorite Love Letters Throughout The Decades

As they say, love letters never go out of style

Writing love letters is as old as writing itself and has, over the centuries, become a sort of genre on its own. As such, some of the best ones throughout history have been passed on from generation to generation. The words teach us different things, give us an intimate glimpse of the love between the individuals and provide us insight with how our own relationships uniquely work.

It’s not the same for everyone, but we can all appreciate a great love letter.

“I realized one thing: the woman is the reflection of her man.

If you love her to the point of madness, she will become it.”

Because the effects of love can sometimes be all-encompassing and we too often forget this.

From Elizabeth Taylor to Richard Burton

“My darling, (my still) My husband,

I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you—(with you)—my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times. Most of all my love for you, and whatever love you can dole out to me—I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only 'boil and bubble' inside and hope you understand how I really feel.

Anyway I lust thee, Your (still) Wife.”

Elizabeth Taylor wrote this love letter to Richard Burton just before their divorce, proving to us that sometimes relationships end, but the love doesn’t have to.

From Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

“Diego, my love,

Remember that once you finish the fresco we will be together forever once and for all, without arguments or anything, only to love one another.

Behave yourself and do everything that Emmy Lou tells you.

I adore you more than ever. Your girl, Frida

(Write me)”

Because this shows us that love is always home; it’s always the light at the end of the tunnel. Love is one of the things that can keep pushing us moving forward.

From Jericho Rosales to Kim Jones

“To my best friend, cheers to more years of annoying each other and laughing 'til we pee! I am so happy to be your recce partner."

Because love is fun.

From Johnny Cash to June Carter Cash

“Hey June,

That's really nice June. You've got a way with words and a way with me as well.

The fire and excitement may be gone now that we don't go out there and sing them anymore, but the ring of fire still burns around you and I, keeping our love hotter than a pepper sprout.

Love,
John”

Because love changes throughout the years, but it can still stay.

From Noah to Allie

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. And that’s what you’ve given me. That’s what I’d hoped to give to you forever. I love you. I’ll be seeing you.”

Because while Noah and Allie are two parts of a fictional couple, they taught us what love could be like—not just in the forever sense.

From Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas

"Everyone is furious with me for going back to you, but they don't understand us. I feel that it is only with you that I can do anything at all. Do remake my ruined life for me, and then our friendship and love will have a different meaning to the world. I wish that when we met at Rouen we had not parted at all. There are such wide abysses now of space and land between us. But we love each other."

Because love is between the people that make the relationship and no one else.

The best thing about love letters is that they’re personal. You’re writing to a specific person and just letting all your feelings out. It’s your hand to their eyes, your heart to theirs. But love doesn’t have to be romantic; you can feel it for a passion and sometimes even a thing.
