PH’s Back-to-Back Win at the 2016 WESG

PH continues to prove itself as a strong contender in the world of e-sports

2017 looks brighter than ever as Filipinos yet again conquer the international e-sports scene. Many thanks to the boys that make up TNC Pro Team and Euniel “Staz” Javiñas of PH alliance who took home big wins for the Philippines in two video game tournaments at the 2016 World Electronic Sports Games (WESG) grand finals in Changzhou, China mid January.

TNC—comprised of Marc "Raven" Fausto, Ryo "ryOyr" Hasegawa, Samson "Sam_H" Hidalgo, Carlo "Kuku" Palad and Timothy "Tims" Randrup—killed it at the DOTA 2 tournament after defeating Denmark’s Cloud 9. Adding to their victorious streak, the team also won a whopping $1.5 million dollar prize pool and ultimately took home $800,000 or P40M this year.

Meanwhile, Staz brought Swedish player Jon “Orange” Westberg to his knees as he emerged the Hearthstone World Finals victor. This earned him a jaw-dropping cash prize of $150,000 or approximately P7.5M.

TNC Pro Team

its notable firsts and triumphs under its belt. They were the first Philippine team to qualify for The International, with their victory cited as one of the biggest upset in the competition’s history. Thereafter, the original players left with some returning later on to form the TNC Pro Team today that won the 2016 WESG.

Euniel “Staz” Javiñas

Staz Javiñas shocked the world with his unexpected victory in this year’s WESG. With little to no experience in Hearthstone, Staz started playing the game in 2014 and quickly adapted to it. The e-sports community took notice of the player in the same year through his various tournament wins. But after being denied a US visa twice in his career, Staz signed up for a job that took much of his time. Naturally, his game took a backseat and yet he still made it to the Top 40 SEA Qualifiers of 2015. He went on to compete in the Singapore Majors, join the PH Alliance to compete in Korea and ultimately won in the 2016 WESG World Finals. Today, Staz ranks 4th in Asia and 53rd in the World.

Congratulations to both TNC and Staz!
