What To Expect From Apple Airpods 2

Here’s the need-to-know before the wireless earbuds hit the stores

The world of technology may be vast, but Apple’s product launches remain one of the market’s annual highlights. There’s always a mix of anticipation, surprise and awe in the months leading to a release.

These days, the rumor mill is focused heavily on the next generation wireless earbuds from the Cupertino-based company, appropriately dubbed AirPods 2. The pair will reportedly release in September this year, two years after the simultaneous release of the original AirPods and the iPhone 7.

But other than the release date, here are a few more things we can look forward to:

Coming quick

It’s common for tech communities and websites to look for patterns when it comes to Apple and how the company releases its products. These patterns are then used to predict when a new lineup is coming out, but there seems to be no clear consensus when it comes to the launch of AirPods2.

Some say that Apple has been working on two versions of the wireless earbuds, set to be released in 2018 and then 2019. Another leak, however, claims that the release date will fall somewhere within the year while a separate report points towards a March or June release in 2019.

Amids these speculations, one thing is certain: It won’t be long before the AirPods 2 gets an official release.

This coming from the heels of Apple’s release of a charging case for the upcoming earbuds back in September 2017, industry experts are quite skeptical about the look of the AirPods 2, which might retain the signature white color of the previous generation. The second-generation charging case looks very similar to the original, save for a battery indicator now located on the outside of the case.

At this point, it’s not clear whether or not Apple will bundle the AirPower wireless charger with the case and the actual earbuds or if individuals will have to shop for them separately. The market is also calling for some rubber tips to be attached to the AirPods 2 in order for the fit to be a little more snug. Others are also saying that the tech giant should ditch the dangling receiver in order to provide even more comfort.

Upgraded chip

The next-gen AirPods will reportedly have a W2 chip under the hood, just like the one currently powering the Apple Watch 3. Compared to the W1, this chip will offer better wireless connectivity.

Activating Siri

AirPods 2 will have voice activation capabilities. This means that you can launch Siri without tapping on one of your earbuds. All you have to do is say “Hey, Siri” and you’ll have Apple’s smart assistant at your beck and call.

Longer battery life

Apple works hard to improve the battery life of every product that it brings to the market—and this is likely to continue with AirPods 2. If the current model can go for 500 charger cycles, meaning to the times you use all of the battery’s power, Apple might double this come their next release.

Biometric sensors

Based on patents filed by Apple, AirPods 2 will include fitness-tracking biosensors. These sensors will reportedly have the capability to take measurements such as heart rate, stroke volume, body temperature and the like.

Noise cancellation

If the reports prove to be true, you might be able to get your hands on a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds soon. The details, however, are a little vague at this point, so take this bit of news with a grain of salt.

No matter what, based on Apple’s track record, another awesome piece of technology is coming within reach.
