Eerie

The newest addition to the roster of Filipino movies available on Netflix is Eerie, a 2019 supernatural horror film release directed by young independent filmmaker Mikhail Red (Birdshot). At the forefront are Bea Alonzo and Charo Santos-Coscio. Pat Consolacion (Alonzo), a guidance counselor at Sta. Lucia Academy, uncovers the reason behind the untimely and gruesome demise of a student. She unburies secrets behind the institution and the people who foster it. 

Seven Sundays

When Manuel Bonifacio (Ronaldo Valdez) is diagnosed with cancer, his children—played by all-star cast Aga Muhlach, Dingdong Dantes, Cristine Reyes and Enrique Gil—reunite to nurture him. Unbeknownst to them, the four unearth deep-seated issues that they have to deal with once and for all. The tearjerker, directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, highlights the Filipino thrust of family, which all can surely relate with. Prepare tissues, lots and lots of it. 

Heaven’s Waiting 

Heaven’s Waiting examines the idea of heaven, hell and the in-between. Ex-lovers Manolo and Lisang, played by veteran actors Eddie Garcia and Gina Pareño, respectively, encounter each other in purgatory where they dig up their past. Last April, the movie was screened at the 21st Far East Film Festival (FEFF) in Udine, Italy where Asian films are showcased to reduce the cultural distance between the East and the West.

Four Sisters And A Wedding

“Bakit parang kasalanan ko pa? (How come it’s my fault?)” A classic blockbuster Pinoy favorite is Four Sisters And A Wedding. Chances are, you’ve encountered a GIF from the meme-worthy film without even watching it. In this drama-comedy, the Salazar sisters (Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, Shaina Magdayao and Toni Gonzaga) reunite to halt their younger brother (Enchong Dee) from marrying his fiancée. Will they succeed? 

Aurora

Another horror-thriller on the list is Aurora—an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival 2018—starring Anne Curtis. Leana (Curtis) sees dead people. This escalates when a ship, aptly named Aurora, crashes nearby. The film is inspired by the 1987 tragedy of the MV Doña Paz, a Philippine-registered passenger ferry that sank in a collision.
