Juice Up Your EV in Manila: 29 Free Charging Stations

Driving an electric vehicle (EV) supports a cleaner, greener lifestyle. However, it can be challenging to find a place to charge, especially when you’re stuck in city traffic or before driving out of Manila.

Find the best EV charging stations in the metro, so you’ll always know where to plug in and power up—whether you’re doing errands in the city or heading out of town.

Charge Your Car While You Recharge in the Mall

The best part? You can have fun while you wait. Shop, dine, watch a movie, or hang out in a cafe. It's the perfect chance to grab “Me Time.”

Globe’s G-Gantic Goals Draws 100,000 Rewards Points Donations Unlocking Over Php 1M Worth of Support

Globe’s G-Gantic Goals Draws 100,000 Rewards Points Donations Unlocking Over Php 1M Worth of Support

917 Hapag Movement families to receive grocery package, cinema experience

In celebration of G Day, Globe successfully engaged its customers to support efforts against involuntary hunger, reaching its goal of collecting 100,000 Globe Rewards points five days ahead of the target.

Through Globe’s G-Gantic Goals campaign, 100,000 Globe customers donated 1 Rewards point each to support The Hapag Movement, a program dedicated to alleviating involuntary hunger and providing livelihood opportunities to vulnerable families nationwide.

G-Gantic Goals is among activities being held in celebration of G DAY, Globe’s annual event commemorating its iconic 917 prefix. Beyond exclusive rewards and exciting surprises, Globe is offering an opportunity for customers to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need through the campaign.

“G-Gantic Goals or GGG empowers our customers to become active agents of change, helping combat hunger and contributing to broader sustainable development goals. We are very grateful to those who helped us achieve our G-Gantic Goal of raising 100,000 Rewards points for The Hapag Movement faster than expected!” said Jerome Patalud, Head of Globe Rewards.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, added: "By aligning our G Day celebration with The Hapag Movement, we're showcasing how technology can be a force for social good. This campaign exemplifies how business goals, customer engagement, and social responsibility can come together to create shared value for everyone involved."

G-Gantic Goals called for 1-point Rewards donations from its customers starting September 1, kicking off the month-long G DAY celebrations. The donation period was supposed to end on September 20, but Globe reached the 100,000 target by September 15.

The campaign will culminate on September 28, Saturday of the National Family Week with a special treat for 917 Hapag Movement beneficiary families or about 3,688 individuals who will receive G Day grocery baskets filled with food essentials worth over Php 1 million.

As an added surprise, the families will also be treated to a free movie screening where they can watch together and bond— an experience that will be a first for some. The screenings will take place at select Ayala Malls Cinemas nationwide: TriNoma, Ayala Malls Feliz, U.P. Town Center, Ayala Malls MarQuee Mall in Pampanga, Ayala Center Cebu, and Ayala Malls Abreeza in Davao.

Globe is collaborating with partners including Ayala Foundation, Scholars of Sustenance Philippines, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Puregold Price Club Inc. to bring this special treat to life.

G-Gantic Goals is just one of the many ways Globe customers can support causes through their Rewards points. Globe encourages its customers to explore other G Day programs this year, emphasizing how small individual contributions can lead to significant collective impact.

For more information about G Day and how to participate in G-Gantic Goals, check the GlobeOne app or visit the G Day page.

Globe's 'AA' MSCI ESG Rating: Two Years of Sustainability

Globe Maintains 'AA' MSCI ESG Rating for 2nd Consecutive Year, Leadership in Sustainability Practice

Globe has maintained its MSCI ESG Rating of "AA" for the second consecutive year, solidifying its position as an Environment, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) leader in the telecom industry.

MSCI ESG Research provides MSCI ESG Ratings on global public and a few private companies on a scale of AAA (leader) to CCC (laggard), according to exposure to industry-specific ESG risks and the ability to manage those risks relative to peers. MSCI assesses governance structures, policies, targets, performance metrics, and any related controversies of companies. Globe's consistent "AA" rating demonstrates its proactive approach to managing risks and its dedication to sustainable business practices.

Globe remains committed to decarbonization. As the first Philippine company with science-based net zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Globe has made significant strides in minimizing its carbon footprint. In 2023, the company achieved an 18% reduction in emissions through various green initiatives, including energy management programs, increased use of renewable energy, and strategic operational changes. To ensure fair representation of Globe’s GHG emissions, Globe’s data in 2023 underwent third-party verification.

Building digital trust also remains a top thrust for Globe. It has implemented robust cybersecurity measures, including Risk-Based Vulnerability Management (RBVM) and regular audits.  Globe's significant investment in cybersecurity, totaling approximately US$101.2 million since 2015, underscores its focus on protecting customer data and ensuring the integrity of its digital infrastructure.

On the other hand, Globe's care for its employees is evident in its comprehensive benefits package which exceeds mandatory government requirements. The mobile leader offers innovative programs such as the myChoice FlexBen Program, allowing employees to customize their benefits, and the Longevity Award Program, which recognizes tenured employees with company shares. Globe's recent G-Evolution Program further proves its commitment to sustainability by incentivizing employees to adopt electric vehicles. The company was recently hailed for the fourth consecutive year for HR Asia Best Companies to Work For in Asia, The Philippines Chapter (2024).

Pursuant to Globe’s Board Risk Oversight and Sustainability Committee (BROSC) charter, the BROSC’s role is to oversee Globe’s sustainability policies, strategies, and programs and ensure appropriateness in addressing sustainability-related risks and opportunities and effectiveness and alignment in addressing expectations of the stakeholders (A copy of the charter is available at the Globe’s Corporate Governance webpage). Moreover, Globe has implemented ESG-linked incentives for executives and employees, fostering a culture of responsibility and excellence throughout the organization.

"Our ESG rating reflects the collective effort of our entire organization in integrating sustainability principles in the way we do business. We remain dedicated to driving positive change, not only within our company but also in the communities we serve and the nation at large,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe's Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

“We are committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, which is integral to our overall ESG strategy. Our consistent 'AA' rating is a testament to Globe's rigorous approach to compliance and governance. This recognition not only reflects our dedication to ethical business practices but also underscores our role as a responsible corporate citizen," said Marisalve Ciocson-Co, Globe’s Chief Compliance Officer.

In the face of long-term ESG-linked risks, Globe consistently demonstrates its resilience, innovating and adapting to the evolving landscape of digital solutions. Its commitment to sustainable business practices sets a benchmark for the industry and creates long-term value for all stakeholders. Help Alleviate Hunger: GlobeOne App Now Accepts Rewards Points Donations for Project PEARLS

Help Alleviate Hunger: GlobeOne App Now Accepts Rewards Points Donations for Project PEARLS

In celebration of Project PEARLS' 14th anniversary, Globe and TM customers can now help combat hunger in the country and give disadvantaged children a better life by donating their Rewards points to the organization through the GlobeOne app.

Project PEARLS, a partner of Globe's hunger alleviation program, The Hapag Movement, has been tirelessly working since 2010 to provide education, empowerment, nutrition, and healthcare to communities in need across Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zambales.

As it enters another year of service, Project PEARLS is expanding its fundraising efforts to reach more supporters and make an even greater impact.

"We are happy to partner with Globe in offering this convenient yet impactful way for its customers to contribute to our cause," said Melissa Villa, Project PEARLS Founder and Executive Director. "Every donation, no matter how small, helps us provide nutritious meals, education, and healthcare to children and families in need."

Globe and TM customers can donate as little as one Rewards point to Project PEARLS, making it easier than ever for individuals to support the organization's vital work. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Hapag Movement's goal of leveraging technology and partnerships to drive collective action for sustainable development.

"We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Project PEARLS on its 14th anniversary of making a profound difference in communities across the Philippines," said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. "To mark this milestone, we are excited to empower more people to join the fight against hunger by offering our customers the opportunity to donate their Rewards points to Project PEARLS via the GlobeOne app.”

In addition to the new GlobeOne app donation channel, Project PEARLS is commemorating its anniversary with other exciting initiatives.

Project PEARLS has launched a virtual charity auction, offering supporters the chance to bid on exclusive items such as a Taylor Swift-signed acoustic guitar, framed NBA jerseys autographed by basketball legends Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Steph Curry, a trip to Tuscany, and more. While primarily targeting US-based supporters, these prizes can be shipped worldwide, expanding the reach of Project PEARLS' fundraising efforts.

The anniversary celebrations will culminate in a gala event at the end of the month, bringing together some of Project PEARLS' biggest partners, including Globe and Canva. This event will highlight the organization's achievements and reinforce its commitment to creating lasting change in communities across the Philippines.

Globe’s collaboration with Project PEARLS started earlier this year. The organization became an international partner of the Hapag Movement, enabling US-based individuals and corporations to contribute to the cause through the dedicated platform at Be a Hero for the Hungry page. This alliance has opened up new avenues for global engagement, particularly among the 4 million Filipino-Americans in the United States.

The Hapag Movement, launched in 2022, has already made significant strides in addressing hunger in the Philippines. To date, it has provided food packs to over 95,000 Filipinos and produced 2,662 livelihood training graduates, with 2,361 of them successfully starting their own small businesses.

Despite these efforts, the need for continued support remains crucial. In June 2024, 17.6% of Filipino families reported experiencing involuntary hunger or had nothing to eat at least once, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey. This is an increase from 14.2% in March 2024.

Hapag Movement and Project PEARLS call on the public to support its various fundraising activities as every contribution helps the organization move closer to its vision of a world where no child goes hungry.

Globe has embedded sustainability into its core operations, starting with identifying its material topics. Through its biennial materiality study, the company is able to prioritize the key concerns of its stakeholders. Globe also conducts an enterprise-level risk assessment exercise where sustainability-linked risks are included. This yearly activity, where top management and management committees across all business units participate, ensures that Globe remains vigilant and proactive in its sustainability efforts.

Applying both a top-down and bottom-up approach, executives set the sustainability ambitions, align them with the company’s business objectives, and allocate the necessary resources to reach their goals. Both employees and executives are provided incentives to drive greater adoption and accountability of sustainability commitments and targets.

Sustainability Councils have been established as platforms to upskill, share best practices, and discuss sustainability-linked challenges and opportunities to better serve the customers. Internal ESG Playbooks have also been crafted to offer practical guidance.

Adhering to the principles of transparency and accountability, Globe annually publishes its Integrated Report to share its ESG performance. This summarizes how Globe creates value for and with its stakeholders to deliver positive societal and environmental impact. The report also marks the second year of adopting the GSMA ESG Metrics for Mobile, highlighting the company’s material impact across the mobile industry’s industry-specific KPIs, particularly in Environment, Digital Inclusion, Digital Integrity, and Sustainable Supply Chain.

The Integrated Report is externally assured to ensure that the non-financial sustainability-related disclosures and performance data meet the reporting standards of GRI and SASB and the principles of Stakeholder Inclusiveness, Materiality, Responsiveness, Reliability, Completeness, and Neutrality.

Likewise, for the first time, Globe has secured an Independent Verification Statement certifying the fair representation of Globe’s GHG emissions data, covering Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

Globe’s #SeniorDigizen Campaign Helps Pasig City Seniors Embrace Tech with Confidence

Globe’s #SeniorDigizen Campaign Helps Pasig City Seniors Embrace Tech with Confidence

Pasig City resident Tessie Lumacan, 61, was once scammed—a distressing incident that underscored the importance of digital literacy for seniors. The former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Hong Kong had fallen victim to a phishing scam involving her brother's hacked Facebook account, where she unknowingly sent her hard-earned money.

Na-scam na ako eh. Kaya careful akong mag-press ng mga link link na ‘yan,” she said.

This experience left her wary of online interactions, making Globe’s Senior Digizen Learning Session an invaluable opportunity for her and other seniors to learn more about avoiding scams and effectively using digital tools.

Senior citizens from around Pasig City at the San Miguel Elementary School for Globe’s Senior Digizen Learning Session.

About 80 senior citizens from around Pasig City turned up for Globe’s Senior Digizen Learning Session at the San Miguel Elementary School, June 26, 2024

Globe recently brought the Senior Digizen campaign to the San Miguel Elementary School in Barangay San Miguel, Pasig City, gathering some 80 seniors from various barangays across Pasig for half a day of learning digital skills.

At hand were 45 Globe volunteers who assisted the seniors as they learned lessons on the basics of using mobile phones, fundamentals of cybersecurity, and making the most out of apps such as GCash and KonsultaMD.

Pasig City Councilor Paul Roman Santiago thanked Globe for bringing the program to the city, citing the importance of digital literacy for seniors amid the prevalence of scams.

For Lumacan, the session was a turning point. "Kahit ‘yung mga tumatawag, sabihin ‘Congratulations, nanalo ka!’ hindi ko na ‘yan gagalawin, hindi ko na pipindutin ‘yung link kasi na-phobia na ako dyan. Kaya at least alam ko na ngayon,” she explained, expressing her improved confidence in handling potential scams.

Former teacher and call center agent Elda Hernandez, 61, echoed the sentiment. "Phishing, smishing, vishing. ‘Yung differences nila natutunan ko, how to avoid them, pagpasok sa telepono mo ng mga messages. You have to be careful about clicking the links that they send you,” she said.

Both also highlighted their newfound knowledge about GCash and KonsultaMD. “Paying your bills, you can send money to others, you can receive money from your bank to your GCash, even from abroad,” Hernandez said.

Like Lumacan and Hernandez, learning about GCash and KonsultaMD was also particularly valuable for Alleili Canilla, a 72-year-old retired communications professional from Barangay San Miguel, and 67-year-old Rafael Yamio, from Barangay San Jose.

Ang pinakamahalagang lesson na natutunan ko sa inyo ay tungkol doon sa GCash. Actually, ‘di ko alam ang GCash noon, ngayon alam ko na. At saka yung mga consultation sa mga doktor,” said Canilla.

Yamio said the session helped him recover his GCash account. “Nawala ‘yung GCash nung isang beses sa cellphone. Tapos na-recover ko rin. Doon sa speaker, doon ko lang nalaman na ‘ah, pwede palang ganito’,” he shared.

He said the Senior Digizen Learning Session is important for seniors like him in this digital age. “Kailangan mong matuto para sa sarili mo, hindi para umasa ka sa anak, sa kapitbahay, o sa kaibigan,” he stressed.

Globe volunteers guide senior citizens through digital literacy lessons at the Globe Senior Digizen Learning Session in Pasig City, June 26, 2024.

Such feedback from the participants shows the importance of initiatives such as the #SeniorDigizen campaign, which is part of Globe's broader push for digital inclusion.

By addressing seniors' apprehensions about technology and protecting them from online risks, the program empowers them to use online services with confidence and enhance their quality of life.

“We are committed to fostering digital inclusion for all, especially our senior citizens who might feel left behind in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. The Senior Digizen program is designed to empower the elderly with life-enabling knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently and safely,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe.

As the nation continues its rapid digital transformation, Globe remains dedicated to creating an inclusive digital future. The company's various initiatives reflect its commitment to promoting digital literacy across all segments of society.

15 Eco-Friendly Pinoy, Korean, and Japanese Beauty Products

Shopping & Lifestyle

15 Eco-Friendly Pinoy, Korean, and Japanese Beauty Products

Sustainable living starts with simple swaps. Just like bringing your own eco bag, using eco-friendly beauty products reduces waste and helps protect natural resources.

Start with this sustainable beauty product guide. Learn how to recognize if a product is good for an environment. Then, discover the standout products from “clean and green” Filipino, Korean, and Japanese brands. You’ll find the perfect match for your needs, budget, and green living goals.

How Do I Know If a Beauty Product is Eco-Friendly?

Flat lay of beauty products with leaves.

Eco-friendly beauty products protect natural resources and minimize waste.

Before buying any product, check three things: what it’s made of, how it’s made, and how it’s packaged. This will tell you if it’s eco-friendly.

Do some research on the brand you’re buying from. Check the brand website or a store’s product page. It also helps to know what these terms mean.

  • Natural. It’s made from natural sources like plants, animals, and minerals.
  • Plant-based. Its main ingredients are sourced from plants, but it may still contain some animal-sourced ingredients.
  • Vegan. It doesn’t contain any ingredients from animals, which avoids the environmental impact of animal farming like greenhouse gases and deforestation.
  • Organic. Its ingredients are grown using methods that protect the soil and water, and reduce pollution (i.e., no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides). Not all natural or plant-based beauty products are organic. Look for certifications from organizations like USDA, COSMOS, and ECOCERT.
  • Cruelty-free. Its ingredients and the final product aren't tested on animals.
  • Eco-friendly packaging. Its containers are biodegradable, recyclable, reusable, or refillable.

Now that you know what to look for, consider buying from eco-friendly Pinoy or Asian brands. You can support local businesses or find products made for tropical weather.

Bargain Alert: Globe Go+ Promos come with a discount voucher you can use at beauty stores. Choose from 10% off for SM Beauty, ₱100 off for Watsons, or up to 20% off for Lazada. Download the GlobeOne app to redeem your Globe Rewards points for Lazada and Shopee vouchers.

Globe and Philtower Partner to Deliver Digital Literacy Training to Baguio City's Elderly

Globe and Philtower Partner to Deliver Digital Literacy Training to Baguio City's Elderly

Globe and Phil-Tower Consortium Inc. (PhilTower) recently joined forces to facilitate a digital literacy session for elderly leaders of Baguio City to equip them with knowledge on cybersecurity and address misconceptions on the effect of cell towers on health.

Jim Akut II, Globe’s Stakeholder Engagement and Community Governance Lead, speaks in front of Baguio seniors at an event with PhilTower.

The event, attended by 50 members of the Federation of Baguio Senior Citizens Associations (FBASECA) Secretary's Club, featured Globe's Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), which educates the youth, parents, teachers, and the elderly about online safety and security, online etiquette and responsibility, digital discernment, and digital empowerment.

"The elderly are among those most vulnerable to online scams and fraud. By understanding the different types of online threats, our senior citizens can better protect themselves and their personal information,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

“Our partnership with Philtower in this undertaking not only highlights the critical role that reliable connectivity plays in enabling access to online resources and opportunities. More importantly, we are addressing the need for digital literacy to help senior citizens fully participate in the digital age and improve their overall quality of life,” said Michelle Ora, Vice President for Site Lifestyle Management Service.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, through City Social Welfare & Development Officer Liza Bulayungan, expressed support for the initiative. He requested Globe and Philtower to conduct more sessions to reach more seniors in the city, aligned with Baguio’s goal of becoming a smart, well-connected city.

During the event, Globe representatives led the DTP training, explaining various types of fraud, such as phishing, spoofing, malware scams, online shopping scams, data harvesting, and social engineering.

The discussion also covered the significance of a strong internet signal for various online activities, the dangers of unauthorized use of repeaters, and myths related to radiation from cell towers

Globe also addressed misconceptions about cell towers and radiation, sharing a video on the Department of Health's stance on cell tower radiation, showing that wireless technology does not cause harm to health.

Maida Bruce, Chief Financial and Strategy Officer at Philtower, delivered the closing remarks, reiterating the commitment of both Globe and Philtower to promoting digital literacy and ensuring a safe online environment for everyone.

Philtower, a registered Common Tower Provider in the Philippines, builds shared future-proof telecom structures and facilities for indoor and outdoor coverage. The company is dedicated to creating a wireless canopy in the country to support a connected lifestyle.

Globe has a sale and leaseback agreement with PhilTower covering 1,350 towers, located primarily in Mindanao. The deal was in response to the Department of Information and Communications Technology's (DICT) common tower policy, which mandates the sharing of towers among telecom firms to reduce capital expenditures.

Globe Quickly Restores Service in Areas Affected by ‘Aghon’ Outages Due to Power Failure

Globe Quickly Restores Service in Areas Affected by ‘Aghon’ Outages Due to Power Failure

Globe has restored service in parts of Luzon affected by Aghon, which swept through the region over the weekend, bringing heavy rains and floods in various areas.

Telecommunications services were affected due to commercial power outages in provinces that bore the brunt of the storm, the first tropical cyclone to hit the country this year.

Per Globe’s monitoring, outages affected 12 provinces in Southern Luzon, Bicol, and Mimaropa.

As of noon Monday, call, text, and data services have been fully restored in the majority of the affected areas, among them Albay, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Cavite, Marinduque, Masbate, Palawan, and Romblon.

Restoration is nearly complete in Camarines Sur, Laguna, and Quezon, and underway in Mindoro.

“We know how crucial connectivity is to disaster response and recovery operations, that’s why we worked swiftly to restore services in most of the affected areas. Our personnel continue to work double time to bring back connectivity to the remaining few provinces with partial outages,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Globe is also ready to deploy Libreng Tawag and Libreng Charging stations in storm-hit areas as soon as it is safe to do so.

In its 11 a.m. advisory on Monday, state weather bureau Pagasa said Aghon, which has intensified into a typhoon, was spotted 100 kms east southeast of Casiguran Aurora following multiple landfalls across the Luzon landmass over the weekend.  It has gained strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kph and gusts up to 170 kph, moving at 10 kph.

It is expected to continue bringing rains in the coming days in Mimaropa and Western Visayas.

Globe calls on the public to continue monitoring official advisories on the weather. It provides customers free data access to the website of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and PAGASA for updates.

go! | Shopping & Lifestyle: 7 Natural Cleaning Products You Can Make at Home

Shopping & Lifestyle

7 Natural Alternatives for Household Cleaning Products

Making your own cleaning products is a step towards sustainable living. You minimize packaging waste, limit the flow of pollutants into waterways, and reduce your family’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

These natural cleaning materials are also pocket-friendlier than most commercial options. Plus, they take little effort to produce! You can even customize their scent with your favorite essential oils and make your house smell like a spa.

Ready to embrace a greener lifestyle and have a cleaner home? Follow these recipes to whip up natural products in a flash.

1. Scented All-Purpose Cleaner

This gentle disinfectant is perfect for tackling odorous or sticky areas like bathroom walls, kitchen counters, tables, and trash cans. Plus, it’s safe to use on your child’s play areas, cribs, strollers, and toys.

What you need: 1 part vinegar, 1 part water, and drops of essential oils

Procedure: Combine in a spray bottle. Shake well before using. For an added citrusy scent, infuse lemon or orange rinds in the water before adding the vinegar.

Tip: Cut up old rags into small squares and soak them in the solution to make natural, reusable disinfecting wipes.

2. Kitchen Sanitizer

Couple with young daughter cleaning the kitchen counter together.

Since natural cleaning products are gentle and non-toxic, even children can use them to help with chores.

Natural alternatives are effective for general cleaning, but some may struggle to eliminate microorganisms like salmonella and E. coli. For a simple yet potent solution, turn to a pantry staple.

What you need: Vinegar

Procedure: Heat vinegar in the microwave until it reaches 130°F. Make just enough for immediate use, as it loses its potency over time. Spray the hot vinegar onto surfaces like sinks, chopping boards, or kitchen counters, especially after handling raw meat.

Tip: Enhance your cleaning solution by adding essential oils like lavender or peppermint. The scent will repel bugs and keep your kitchen insect-free.

3. Glass and Mirror Cleaner

Keep windows, mirrors, and screens spotless with a three-ingredient natural solution. Adding alcohol to your glass cleaner helps prevent those pesky water streaks and spots from forming.

What you need: 2 cups water, ¼ cup alcohol (70% concentration), and ½ cup white vinegar

Procedure: Mix in a spray bottle. Shake well before using.

Tip: Avoid cleaning windows in extreme heat or direct sunlight because the solution may dry too quickly and leave more streaks.

4. Sink and Appliance Cleaner

Disinfect, remove odor, and restore the shine of stainless-steel sinks and appliances with another pantry staple. Besides being an essential ingredient in pastries, baking soda is one of the most powerful natural cleaning materials for the kitchen.

What you need: 1 liter warm water and 4 tablespoons baking soda

Procedure: Mix water and baking soda to form a concentrated paste. Apply this mixture to the area and let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub with a damp cloth in the direction of the metal’s grain.

Tip: Mix this solution just before use. The warm water helps melt solidified oils and dried bits of food.

5. Rust Remover

Group photo of lemon, salt, vinegar, and cleaning tools like sponge and kitchen gloves

You can make different homecare products using borax, baking soda, lemon, and other pantry items.

Dealing with rust on your tools, gadgets, and appliances? Consider using borax or sodium borate. This powdery white substance, often found in laundry detergent, is like baking soda but can be more potent. However, the material is unsafe to ingest, so store it in a clearly labeled jar and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What you need: 2 parts borax and 1 part lemon juice

Procedure: Combine borax and lemon juice to form a paste. Apply the mixture to the rusty area and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. If the solution hardens, spritz it with some water. Wipe off the rust with a sponge or a damp cloth.

Tip: Avoid using the paste on cast iron cookware because the lemon may cause a chemical reaction. Instead, opt for a mixture of one part borax and one part salt for a rust remover that won’t strip off the cast iron seasoning.

6. Mold and Mildew Remover

Woman holding a spray bottle cleans an appliance with a rag.

Ditch the harsh chemicals! Banish mold and mildew by using a mix of water, vinegar, and borax.

Mold and mildew are types of fungi that can lead to illness if not managed promptly. Mold often appears as fuzzy or slimy circles colored black or green. Meanwhile, mildew spreads on moist surfaces as small, flat gray or black spots, sometimes with a powdery texture. If you notice these signs around your house, prep this natural solution ASAP.

What you need: ½ cup borax and ½ cup vinegar

Procedure: Combine borax and vinegar in a spray bottle, then dilute with hot water. Use a more concentrated solution for tough mold and mildew. For regular cleaning, add more water.

Spray the solution onto affected surfaces like the shower, bathroom floor, or tiles. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse well before using additional cleaning products.

7. Furniture Polish

You can polish wooden furniture, condition leather sofas, and clean brass decor with coconut oil. Yes, it’s not just for cooking or DIY beauty treatments!

What you need: coconut oil

Procedure: Just wipe off the dust, then apply the oil with a soft rag.

General Tips for Making Cleaning Products

Follow these additional tips to ensure the effectiveness of your cleaners.

  • Make small batches. Natural products are best used within a few days since they lose their disinfecting capabilities over time.
  • Label your bottles immediately. Write the name and the date you made the mixture.
  • Do a surface test. Don’t use acidic cleaners on granite and stainless-steel appliances. Similarly, avoid vinegar-based solutions on hardwood floors. When in doubt, test the product in an inconspicuous area first.
  • Check before mixing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Never combine bleach with rubbing alcohol, vinegar, lemon juice, or ammonia. Avoid mixing hydrogen peroxide with vinegar. The combination of these chemicals can produce toxic fumes and irritate the skin. (That’s also why you shouldn’t mix bleach with other commercial cleaning materials.)
  • Avoid combining vinegar and baking soda. Although the mixture isn’t harmful, the two chemicals neutralize each other, diminishing their cleaning effectiveness.

Check around your house for the ingredients for these natural cleaning products. You likely have some of them already. If you need additional materials, consider purchasing them from trusted online stores.
