Leading digital solutions platform Globe has secured the ISO 50001:2018 certification for Energy Management System (EnMS) in line with its strategy to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. 

The EnMS will help implement Globe’s climate ambition of transitioning to a low-carbon operation by laying out a framework for carbon reduction and operational efficiency.

This will also enable the company to pursue alternative energy sources and energy-saving technology and equipment in its operations. Energy-efficient designs will also be incorporated to improve monitoring and performance across all facilities and contribute to the company’s operational energy efficiency targets and objectives.

The certification covers key facilities such as corporate offices, data centers, core network, cell sites, and Globe Stores.  The certification initiative is also in compliance with Republic Act 11285 or the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act requirements to implement a systematic Energy Management System into the business operations.

“Last year, we made sure that we implemented our EnMS in accordance with the ISO 50001 standards.  We wanted to ensure energy efficiency, responsible energy procurement, and improved equipment utilization in our facilities.  We are proud to successfully meet all the requirements and complete the certification audit by BSI Singapore,” said Rizza Maniego-Eala, Globe’s Chief Finance Officer and Chief Risk Officer.

The implementation of an EnMS facilitates proactive stakeholder engagement to collectively identify energy and cost-saving opportunities. The management system’s systematic approach will lead to continuous energy efficiency improvements against baseline and towards identified targets.

The EnMS is governed by representatives from relevant Globe departments who head the program implementation. At the same time, the company has appointed a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and trained Energy Conservation Officers to support compliance requirements.

The EnMS implementation supports the company’s Net Zero commitment. Ahead of receiving the certification, Globe officially joined the #RacetoZero global campaign, spearheaded by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COP26 Presidency, and GSMA, which rallies non-state actors to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero-carbon world by 2050. 

This is in line with Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development, and UN SDG No. 13, which seeks urgent action against climate change and its impacts. 

Globe has also conducted an energy audit to identify opportunities for improvement to ensure that targets at the facility-level are met. Opportunities include upgrading current equipment or installing new equipment to improve energy efficiency within its operations.

In January 2021, Globe also formally joined the globally recognized Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), composed of over 1,800 companies from 78 countries. They became the first and only Philippine publicly listed company to commit to set science-based targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in June of the same year. 

Globe partnered with South Pole, the international leader in climate services, solutions and carbon project development to develop its Net Zero roadmap, and Aon UK Limited to integrate climate-related risks and opportunities into its climate action strategy. Synergi Life by DNV, meanwhile, will automate and simplify Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data collection and progress against targets.

Globe has also shifted 14 key facilities to 100% renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Retail Electricity Suppliers (RES) aligned with the Philippines' policy on clean power. It currently enrolls high-demand facilities and has started shifting lower energy demand facilities with the recent policy updates. Through this, Globe aims to encourage more investments towards clean energy. 

It has also deployed over 8,500 green network solutions such as fuel cell systems, direct current hybrid generators, free cooling systems, and lithium-ion batteries. These solutions use cleaner fuel with lower emissions, consume less diesel fuel, and provide energy-efficient heat removal.
