LTO Registration Renewal: A Step-by-Step Guide

October 9, 2026
Body Text

Owning a vehicle comes with responsibilities, and keeping your registration up to date is one of the most important. In the Philippines, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) regulates vehicle registration to help ensure that every motor vehicle on the road meets legal and safety requirements. So, keeping up with the renewal of your LTO registration also helps you stay compliant and enjoy smoother rides.

That’s why you should know your vehicle registration due date, plate number coding, requirements and fees, and online options to avoid unnecessary delays.

When to Renew Your LTO Car Registration

Your car dealer usually provides you with your vehicle’s initial registration. But it’s the car owner’s responsibility to process it when it expires.

Your LTO registration renewal schedule is based on the last two digits of your vehicle’s license plate number. The last digit determines the month, while the second-to-last digit indicates the week you need to renew. To find your schedule, simply check your plate number.

7, 815th to 21st of the month (3rd week)
9, 022nd to the last day of the month (4th week)

For example, if your plate number is XYZ 5678, your renewal is due in the third week of August. The last digit, 8, determines the month, while the second-to-last digit, 7, determines the week. If you prefer to renew early, the LTO also allows renewal up to 60 days before your scheduled renewal date.

Missing your renewal schedule can lead to additional charges, starting with a ₱100 penalty if you miss your assigned week but renew within the same month. Delaying it further can result in a 50% surcharge on your Motor Vehicle User Charge (MVUC), in addition to your standard registration fees.
