6 Tips to Keep Your New Year's Resolution
Once again, the time has come for us to contemplate our lives and come up with (hopefully new) New Year’s Resolutions!
While 2024 has been a crazy ride for all of us, it’s also the year when many people empowered others to change their lives for the better. For the rest of us, making life changes isn’t that easy. Case in point: How many years have you told yourself you’re gonna start religiously working out—without the gym?
Often, it’s not just a matter of having goals but knowing the hows and whys that actually get us there. So, let’s talk about six life hacks to actualize our resolutions (for real this time).
Tip #1: Keep resolutions insanely simple (KRIS).
Yes, it’s a made-up acronym, but that doesn’t make it any less true. In the book One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way, Robert Maurer writes that the bigger our goals, the more likely we are to experience fear of failure. Our brain gets too fixated on the end game and prevents us from actually making progress.
One way to bypass this fear of failure is to keep resolutions so simple that it’s practically impossible to fail them. Want to start doing a regular workout at home? Start by putting your gym clothes and standing in place for a minute. Easy, right? Now keep that going for a week or so, then once you get the hang of it, level up by jogging in place. Slowly but surely, you’ll work your way up, and soon, you’ll shed off all that excess weight you’ve gained in the whole year.
Tip #2: Don’t be a copycat—have a resolution you can call your own.
Just because your friends have decided to start the same diet for their New Year’s resolution doesn’t mean you also have to. Sure, you may miss out on the fun, but these self-imposed goals are for your personal growth and development.
That doesn’t mean you can’t have a resolution that’s fun. Having your own reason for accomplishing your resolution increases your chances of following through because you’re highly motivated.
Tip #3: Prioritize.
While most millennials are masters at multitasking, having more than one New Year’s resolution can lead to actually not achieving them. Whether you’ll prioritize health, finances, or personal work goals, it’s better to get a head start on it as early as now.
Tip #4: Get an accountability buddy.
There are two kinds of people: those who get motivated by keeping their resolutions to themselves and those who need the support of friends to keep going.
If you’re more of the latter, then share your goals with your closest friends! Tell your resolutions to those who will give you much-needed encouragement and let you take a break when the going gets tough.
Having someone who understands what you’re going through makes the journey less lonely.
Tip #5: Focus on cultivating a habit, not on reaching a goal.
When you think about it, the most popular New Year’s resolutions are actually lifestyle choices meant to be done for a long period. Take “exercising and staying fit” for example. It’s a resolution that will show results only when you commit to months of consistent practice.
But here’s the thing: most of us are too focused on getting immediate results in the short term. Instead of focusing on a goal, James Clear suggests that focusing on the system or daily grind gets us to our goal and reduces the stress and friction that prevents us from making progress.
Tip #6: Treat yo’ self!
At the end of the day, you’re still doing this for yourself. That’s why it’s important to celebrate the little victories now and then.
Set rewards for yourself like a cheat day or an hour of video games when you push through a difficult milestone. Or better yet, treat yourself to a night of exciting performances and activities at NYE at the 5th on December 31, 2024.
