Here’s the 411 on what’s well on its way to edging out the physical SIM card

From the traditional chip to the more compact micro SIM to the even smaller Nano SIM, the evolution of the SIM card is ready for the next frontier. The embedded Subscriber Identification Module (or the eSIM for short), a future-forward alternative that does away with the physical SIM card, is the new revolutionary piece of technology that has officially made its way to the Philippines.

Following in the footsteps of countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Singapore, on this side of the globe, the eSIM is made available for the very first time to subscribers signed on exclusively with Globe Postpaid. This means no more pesky SIM card installations, tinkering with the SIM tray, being hassled by multiple steps for activation or swapping SIM cards to access different numbers. The era of eSIM supported devices saves users the need to keep up with the constant downsizing of physical SIM cards, too, since gadgets of all types, sizes and formats can now sync digitally. With the eSIM, you can cut straight to using your gadgets and centralize multiple user profiles in a cinch.

Apple, Huawei and Samsung Are Making the Switch

To date, the biggest tech giants in the game have already started to render some of their devices eSIM-ready. The Apple Watch, Huawei Smart Watch 2 and Samsung Galaxy Watch are some of the first eSIM-capable gadgets that people can shop today. Apple’s new iPhone Xs, Xs Max and XR, meanwhile, also support the eSIM format on top of the dual sim features they come with.

Starting December 27, 2018, Globe Postpaid users can activate the eSIM of their eSIM-capable smartphones using their respective postpaid plans by visiting select Globe stores.

On the iPhone Xs, for example, eSIM activation is easy. All users have to do is head over to “Settings,” tap on “Cellular Plan” and and scan the QR code on the eSIM voucher provided by a Globe Store agent. Voila! A new profile or mobile number is instantly added to their device.

Users may request to activate their eSIM in place of their physical SIM card and add multiple profiles to a single device,  which can then store anywhere between seven and 10 profiles. This all depends on the chip size and profile size being downloaded. The iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max with 64GB, for instance, can download up to seven profiles into a single smartphone.

User Profiles Are Seamlessly Centralized

With the eSIM, those who use separate smartphone units for personal, work and travel can make their lives less complicated; they have the ability to switch back and forth between multiple mobile numbers that now get to live in a single device. Looking ahead, an added feature available soon will conversely allow multiple gadgets (anything that requires a SIM card for activation and user identification) to sync seamlessly with a single account all thanks to the eSIM. Have your apps, contacts, network settings and more synchronize across all your eSIM-ready devices every time. Soon, people can enjoy activities like going out for a run bring just their smartwatch along and, more importantly, without having to haul around their smartphone.
