With severe weather disruptions and power grid instability posing risks to essential communication services, Globe has successfully converted over 1,000 cell sites to renewable energy as of August 2026 through the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). This marks a significant step in Globe’s broader strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its network operations while strengthening energy efficiency and sustainability.
Having adopted the program in 2025, Globe stands as the first telecommunications operator in the Philippines to achieve this clean power milestone. The achievement was highlighted during Globe’s Energize 2026 event at The Globe Tower, which brought together key stakeholders to advance power supply management and energy efficiency initiatives.
Complementing this transition, Globe is replacing carbon-heavy diesel generators in remote provinces with hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems paired with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Utilizing Lithium-ion and Sodium-Nickel chemistries, these advanced storage solutions offer safer handling and superior longevity compared to legacy lead-acid batteries. For locations where operational generators remain necessary, automated load management systems optimize fuel usage and minimize engine run times.
Beyond reducing fuel consumption and emissions, these hybrid power systems help sustain cell site operations during prolonged power outages and extreme weather events. This strengthens Globe’s ability to maintain essential communication services for communities and emergency responders when connectivity is most critical.
"A major highlight of executing our Net Zero Strategy has been leveraging the government-initiated Retail Aggregation Program," said Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President for Engineering and Network Planning at Globe. "As the first telco in the Philippines to switch cell sites to renewable energy under RAP, converting over 1,000 sites to clean power reinforces our commitment to operational efficiency, network resilience, and disaster readiness."
The transition to intelligent green infrastructure aligns with Globe’s broader Net Zero Strategy and support for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act. By combining clean energy procurement with efficient power management, Globe continues to strengthen its network backbone, delivering reliable service to millions of Filipinos while driving sustainable telecommunications standards across the nation.
