Globe Logs Over 11M Prepaid SIM Registrants, Urges Customers To Register Before April 26 Deadline

Globe, the leader in Mobile, has registered more than 11 million active prepaid SIMs around a month after the law mandating all Filipinos to register their SIMs took full effect.

Globe hit the milestone 11-million mark on Monday, January 30, 2023, a month Globe after the SIM Registration Act was rolled out as a measure to stop cybercrime, including scam messages that proliferated due to the anonymity provided by prepaid SIMs. 

“We are grateful to our customers for promptly registering their SIMs. We understand the importance of addressing the proliferation of scam and spam messages and have made it our priority to provide our customers with a seamless registration process. We are committed to meeting the deadline and continuing our efforts to protect our customers from scammers and fraudsters,” said Darius Delgado, Head of Globe’s Consumer Mobile Business.

Globe urges its customers who have yet to register to visit its user-friendly registration portal new.globe.com.ph/simreg. There are an estimated 87.4 million existing SIM users under the Globe network.

Registration via the GlobeOne app will begin in February as an added channel where customers may register their SIMs.  As a user of GlobeOne, customers will have access to exclusive offers and deals that are available only in the app.  

Globe also provided support for government-led assisted registration in priority sites nationwide from January 25 to 27. Globe established booths in 15 areas and provided assistance to anyone who needed help, especially those in need of special assistance, including senior citizens, PWDs and those using basic/feature phones.

Other than supporting the NTC-led assisted SIM registration, Globe has also started rolling out its own on-site assistance booths across the country. From January 27 to 29, it led SIM registration assistance in 30 Puregold branches in strategic locations in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It will extend SIM registration assistance in other locations soon.

These efforts aim to provide inclusive ways to get its customers registered by the April 26, 2023 deadline. Users who fail to complete their registration on time will have their SIMs deactivated. 

Even before the new law was implemented, Globe has taken several steps to curb disruptive messages through proactive blocking, threat intelligence partnerships with financial institutions, a customer reporting portal, plus an awareness and education campaign to help customers with online protection.

Globe Holds Assisted Sim Registration In 30 Puregold Branches Across PH

To reach more customers across the country, Globe, the leader in Mobile, is opening assisted registration in 30 branches of leading supermarket Puregold as it hopes to cover as many SIM users under its network as possible before the April 26, 2023 deadline.

Globe will hold assisted SIM registration from January 27 to 29, 2023, in select Puregold branches where SIM users facing challenges in registering their SIMs can get the help they need.

The booths will be open to all Globe and TM SIM users, especially senior citizens, PWDs, or those using basic/feature phones who need help to register their SIMs.

Registrants should be ready with the following information to complete the SIM registration process:

• Address
• Government ID with photo
• Mobile number

Earlier this week, Globe provided support for the NTC-led assisted registration, establishing booths in 15 priority locations from January 25 to 27, 2023. Globe also provided assisted registration for festival goers at the Sinulog Festival in Cebu and the Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo. Globe will roll out more SIM Registration assistance booths across the country in February. 

Globe’s online SIM registration platform, new.globe.com.ph/simreg, is accessible 24/7 for Globe and TM users to register their SIMs. The GlobeOne app will also support SIM registration by February to give customers greater convenience. 

As of January 25, Globe has logged over 10.3 million registrations on its online platform. There are 87.4 million SIM users under the Globe network.

Globe Supports Government-Led Assisted Registration, To Deploy Booths In 15 Areas

Globe, the leader in Mobile, fully supports the government-led simultaneous rollout of assisted SIM registration in remote areas as it shares the goal of reaching all SIM users across the country and get them registered within the April deadline. 

As a service provider, Globe will put up SIM Registration booths in areas identified by the government as priority for assisted registration, including those with poor or no internet access. 

“Globe supports the government’s initiative to put up special assistance booths to serve mobile users in hard to reach areas.  We will exert all effort so all Globe customers will be able to register their SIMs to continue enjoying our services. We will work closely with the government so no one is left behind in the SIM registration process,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu. 

“As we work together towards this shared goal, we look forward to the support of both the national government and LGUs in helping telcos reach out to SIM users and encouraging them to register,” he added.

Globe cautions its customers against offers of SIM registration assistance online and advises them not to share personal information to protect their data security and privacy. 

There are already reports of individuals taking advantage of the SIM registration requirement. They offer their services through social media either for free or for a fee and request the name, photo, valid ID, birthday, cell phone number, and address of SIM users. 

Such personal information, when in the wrong hands, may be used to impersonate their owners, access their accounts, steal money or other fraudulent activities. Identity thieves may also open accounts in another person’s name, run up debt, or commit crimes, causing damaged reputation and financial problems.

"We want to remind our customers to be wary of these types of offers and to only use official channels for their SIM registration," said Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe Chief Privacy Officer. "Your personal information is valuable and we urge you to protect it from those who may want to use it for unlawful purposes."

Instead of seeking help from unknown individuals, customers may register their SIMs for free at new.globe.com.ph/simreg. Registration through the GlobeOne app will also start later this month. They may also ask a trusted family member or friend for assistance. 

Starting February 2023, Globe will also have assisted registration sites for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and users of basic or feature phones. The list of Globe’s registration sites will be announced through our official websites in the coming weeks.

There are 87.9 million SIMs under the Globe network. So far, over 7 million have registered. 

To make the SIM registration process accessible and convenient for all, the company is offering multiple channels for registration. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of these options and complete their SIM registration before the deadline on April 26, 2023 to avoid the risk of SIM deactivation.

The SIM Registration Act, which requires mobile phone users in the Philippines to register their SIMs with their service providers, is being implemented to address the growing problem of fraudulent activities enabled by anonymous SIM use.
