Mobile leader Globe commends the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) for the arrest of two suspects allegedly engaged in the illegal sale of pre-registered SIMs– a violation of the SIM Registration Act

In a buy-bust operation, the PNP-CIDG Detective Special Operations Unit took custody of two Chinese nationals in an attempt to sell pre-registered SIM cards. Authorities confiscated a total of 4,000 SIMs, including 1,700 Globe SIMs and 2,300 TM SIMs, supposedly for use in criminal activities such as online phishing, romance scams, and mobile phone fraud.

Selling or purchasing pre-registered SIMs is illegal. Section 11 of the SIM Registration Act imposes penalties, including imprisonment of six months to six years and/or fines ranging from ₱100,000 to ₱300,000.

“We laud the PNP-CIDG for carrying out this operation, which led to a significant win against fraudsters. Let this successful police operation serve as proof that the SIM Registration Act is working, and that it is a powerful tool against scammers,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe’s General Counsel.

Globe again reminds customers to register only their own SIMs under their names, with the exception of SIMs used by their minor children or other underaged SIM users under their care. Never accept offers to register SIMs on behalf of others in exchange for cash.

Globe also reiterates its advice for customers to be vigilant and avoid purchasing SIMs with tampered packaging, as this could indicate that the SIMs have been previously used and repackaged. Always ensure that SIMs are sealed and purchased from legitimate retailers.

Globe remains steadfast in its advocacy for responsible SIM usage and its mission to uphold the safety and security of its customers in the digital age. It stands ready to support the authorities to boost efforts to combat fraud.
